My '05 Silverado was made in Canada. Is that plant history also?

I thought something was wrong with a Chevy if it didn't use oil! :confused3:

My Truck was bought in USA and made in Canada while my wifes SUV was bought in Canada and made in the USA. Go figure.
I have a 2007 Chevy flex fuel 5.3L and I run it till the computer says change the oil, usually around 7500 miles, and it is always still on the full mark. Neither it nor wife's 2003 Old Bravada with 100Kmiles on it will use even half a quart of oil between changes. I have heard this said many times that dealers say 1 quart or more per thousand miles is within consumption standards. I think a lawyer might disagree with the dealer and one could likely win a new engine in a court case using the lemon law. But this would be unlikely to happen on an older truck, one needs to fight these battles when they are first aware when the vehicles are new.

My last GM used a QT per 600 miles running the 5W30 called for. It started around 30,000 miles. I took it to more than a dozen dealers whit no resolve. At 100,000 miles when the warranty was out I switched to 10W40 and it got a little better only using a QT per 800 miles. I sold it at 129,000 miles and it was totaled a month later texting.

I posted in an earlier thread that my wife's '08 Accord V6 with the variable cylinder mgt was using oil and would foul the plugs up periodically. The plugs got fouled up twice last year in the span of 3 months. I was in the process of doing an oil consumption test with the dealer when the ECM threw a code again for fouled plugs. The car consumed approx. 1 quart per 1000 miles. Just so happened right about the time the last fouled-plug episode happened, Honda reached a settlement in a class action law suit on the oil consumption issue. They've had the issue with all of their V6 engines that have VCM. Honda has agreed to replace the rings in three cylinders (though sometimes plugs for 4 cylinders needed changing).

Anyway, the rings were replaced last October and I've been checking the oil level periodically since and so far so good. We were seriously considering dumping the car, but now we may have a keeper. I mention this since I don't see how GM could deny the issue with Honda agreeing to replace the rings for the same issue.

Perhaps it's just a selected few who have this issue with GM vehicles. I've owned nothing but GM for the past 30 years and none of them have ever used more than 1/4 of a quart between oil changes...There are some anti-GM people on this board who would like everyone to believe that all GM's drink oil. It just ain't so. I've had numerous 5.7's, 6.2's, 5.3's, 5.0's, 4.3's, a 6.2 Diesel and whatever that 5cyl is in the wife's Hummer and none of them consumed any material amount of oil even if run to 200k. Can't speak to the 8.1 as I've never owned one.

At least GM jumped on the self-imposed recall. Another brand had to burn a few garages down before they addressed their cruise control problem.

I'm certainly not saying all GM's use oil since not all Accord V6's do either but it's pretty well known that about all brands that use active cylinder mgt have had these issues with some percentage of equipped vehicles. I'm only wondering how Honda can be forced via court action to address it and GM hasn't (at least to my knowledge). I would think the Honda settlement might at least put more pressure on GM.

Don't take my post the wrong way...I wasn't referring to you as a basher, there is someone else. I've heard about the cylinder de-activation thing. Since I never owned one I can't comment. My brother had one and never had any oil issues with it. He only traded it because he wanted a standard cab while the one he had was an x-cab and he decided he didn't need it. Don't know if the new one has AFM or not. He never said anything.

If there is an inherent problem, I agree that they should deal with it. However, another brand has issues with rotting exhaust manifold studs and spark plug blow outs and they've never been forced to deal with it. Putting a little oil in once in a while is a lot less painful than paying for a time and material repair on an OEM failure.

Yes, it is much less serious a couple engines burning oil as another brand is having connecting rods coming through the blocks.

The AFM is a known issue. I used to fly a higher up from Ford named Rick. I will not use this last name. I asked him 3 or 4 years ago why Ford chose not to use Active Fuel Management. He said they had tested it extensively and could not control oil consumption. That says a lot to me. Most manufacturers have chosen not to increase the miles per gallon via of fuel management and there is a reason for that.

By the way, I have owned four General Motors vehicles and only one burnt oil. I've had 10 or more GM based marine engines and only 8.1 liter burnt oil.

They closed the Truck assembly plant in Oshawa in 2007-8
They make a Cadillac, Impala's, Regals,Malibu's and Camaro's but I think the Camaro is headed to the States for assembly in 2015
