Sodamo, looks like that pile of snow in your backyard might need some FEL work before the grass dies.

I think it was 29 this morning. Sunshine was nice though...

So far, 2014 is a MUCH better year than my unlucky '13 was...

Be well all,

The clouds are rolling in pretty fast and it looks like the rain won't be far behind. So I walked on over and did my fowl duties for the day. My BIL used to travel the fighting cock circuit. These days he just raises them. {Sister wouldn't approve of the blood sport} I remembered the camera today. Here is a few pictures of the most impressive ones. I think the little tin houses of the tethered ones look like tents in an Army camp.

They also do a few hens for eggs. And Sister has a few Peacocks. All these were raised from eggs. The movable pen is called a tractor. How fitting.

BIL is a coon hunting fool. He raised Redbone Coon hounds to sale. The first two are his brood *******. The Bluetick is one he bought to hunt with. The last young dog is one of his best hunters.

Larro, neat pictures, the first one made me zoom in to inspect, couldn't figure out where they were attached and it's not to the shed but to the ground in front.
And far enough away from each other.
pretty hard to socialize that way, but then, their DNA might not be too friendly.

tastes like chicken but mighty tough...;)

Their tether is anchored in the front. It lets them get in out of the weather, but not out the back side so they don't get tangled up. And there is a safe path between the rows. The game hens are on the yard now, and they socialize with the rosters when I scatter the feed.

He used to have only game chickens, and would keep one roster in each hen house. So when I had to gather the eggs, I would carry a walking stick. I never got got, but I wasn't going to chance it either.

These dogs are good hunting dogs, but almost everyone they sell is as a pet. It's a shame to put a dog with a nose like that in a little backyard for it's whole life.

With all the chickens, coons used to be a big problem for them. Now after six years in the coon hound business, they are just about cleaned them out. He had a pup named Thunder that was raised with the chickens and would protect them from all critters. He was the only dog that ran loose. In five years the BIL had killed over 100 coons with Thunder. He would be in a dead sleep and hear her baying. He would roll out of bed and grab his boots and rifle, go kill the coon and come back to bed. Last summer Thunder got bit by a rattler and it killed him. They have been trying to train another chicken dog, but he wants to suck eggs instead of protecting the chickens.

It's very difficult to train a dog to protect chickens, they want to chase them, kill them and suck eggs. My dad shot an egg sucker once. We had a small farm and dad worked at the Ford plant in Norolk, VA. No room or time for a destructive dog. We had good luck using female beagles with chickens. They kept the coons, possums, weasels, snakes, minks, foxes and bobcats away. Thankfully there were no coyotes in northeastern NC then, they're overrun now.
