the cost of a .22 isn't too much, and by the time you buy a used barrel then try to buy or fabricate all the other pieces, you're likely to have as much or more in it that one would cost to buy, not to mention the time involved. at that point you are doing it as a labor of love - it's something you enjoy, and not a cost saver.

this sounds like you want to make one to avoid the legal paperwork as much as any other reason. this makes me wonder... if that is the case, is it a smart thing to ask how to build a firearm to avoid the government knowing about it - in a public forum?

I guess you could call it a labor of love. Just an idea that I've been tossing around for a year or more.
Something fun & different & something to use & abuse without worry of damage.

Asking questions & dreaming does not violate any laws, so no problem with a public forum. AT present even building it does not violate any law.
Altho CA is trying to pass a law against building a gun by a regular person.

Wasp and Hornet spray will get them subdued enough to step on them and capture them. Sprays 15' for a few seconds and takes a snake out! I have a derringer snake charmer 45/.410 and I use it but for skins, I use the spray. Try it. Oh but its $3.00 a snake.

Never heard of the Wasp spray thing. May try it some day, but will not be holding my breath. No foot stomping as long as I have my trusty little shovel with a sharp edge. Don't bother with the skins, or even the rattles, just toss the whole snake out for the buzzards to eat.

Don't really fear a rattler, but do have a lot Respect for them. All other snakes get a free pass & even encourage them to hang around.

A few years ago I did something, I'll tell everyone not to do as it is really stupid. A rattler was headed for my sleeping dog. I grabbed it by the tail and threw it just as far as I could. I did get away with it. But they are quicker than lighting and that is a good way to get bit.

Can you down load your .410 shells for less noise & power?? Same question on your .45?

I no longer have any reloading equipment. But many, many years ago I loaded blanks for a stage play company. Commercial blanks were far too loud for use inside a building and at close range. 4FG Black powder (don't remember how much) & a shell cut piece of cork gasket. Tested them on white paper to look for powder burns & penetration.

I don't know about a .410, but it would be easy to load down a .45 to any power you wanted. Sometimes on really reduced loads, the primers may back out, which can tie up a revolver from rotating the cylinder. You can enlarge the flash hole to prevent the primer setback. But you want to segregate those hulls and not use them for full power loads.

i think a primer on a crimped cartridge might be a good blank.. ;)

How about a black powder muzzle loading pistol? You could find a cheap used muzzel loading rifle and cut the barrel up into smaller barrels and use a percussion cap ignition. Since the barrel is rifled it won't be a shot gun.
You can load it with whatever projectiles you want and 40-60 grains of Hodgdon triple x or pyrodex or whatever.
There are lots of black powder guns that have been abused or otherwise neglected. The powder residue is corrosive and if not cleaned shortly after use, they become inaccurate and useless as a rifle.
Since your only using them to kill snakes at close range the rifling won't matter.
You just need to work out the details with the trigger and ignition.
