Snow Equipment Owning/Operating Cutting / Groving / Siping R-4 for snow

Ordered my grooving tool on Monday, came yesterday. Guess what I did today?:D I started on the front tires by measuring 1/2" in from the outside edge of the lugs for a starting point. As long as you give the tool time to heat up properly it was pretty straightforward. I put one groove in the center of each lug then ran a groove all the way around the center of the tire. That part was easy as the tires are still fairly new so I could see where the mold met in the middle of the tire. I went with a single groove on each of the rear tire lugs. The outside lugs were like butter, just put my azz behind it and the tool went right through. I used a very complicated technical method of marking where I wanted to start the groove on the rear tires. I took a flat carpenter's pencil, lined it up with the outside of the lug and used a sharpie to mark a line. The inside lugs took longer and required more arm work, but I got it done.

Sounds great! Would you mind posting some pics of your finished product?

I saw someone else ran a groove around the center of the tire and I thought that based on everything I've learned that it made sense. When turning, the front tires can grab snow on the centerline of the tire for lateral traction.

Rear tires I went with a single groove per tire. 1/4" deep on the front tires, about 3/8" on the rears. Did it all freehand, I just marked where I wanted to start on the outside edge of each lug.

Reading this entire thread took a while! Interesting stuff.

Since grooving both adds more edges, but also softens the lugs, what change have you guys seen in how much the grooved tires damage lawns?

I took a different pattern WP_20131221_002.jpgWP_20131221_003.jpgWP_20131221_004.jpg

I can tell you that it improved my overall traction dramatically in the snow and ice. Maybe not as well as R3's and not like chains, but an overall improvement for sure.

Been meaning to do this for quite a while. Now that winter is just around the corner, I went ahead and ordered the knife and started siping away! Just took my time and enjoyed the experience. Before And After Three more tires to go! I hope they work as good as everyone has described. Thomas

Here's my report on performance since siping my tires. We've had quite a bit of snow here in western Michigan which means I've had plenty of seat time out plowing our 450' drive as well as our 2000' cul-de-sac road. I have definitely noticed a difference in how I'm able to hold a line while pushing snow against a heavy load that used to push me side ways. It's been definitely worth it for me!

Good to hear the results of your hard work. MacTractor, that pattern looks like it would do well as oem for Northern states. Seems like very little reduction in strength/prone to chunking or damage, and you got a big improvement. Really a success story, as it seems most of these are.
Toddler, just curious, why would siping hurt a lawn? I don't think you give up much if any flotation here, is the concern too much grip? Chewing on turns?
I can see where taking it through mud and then dropping bits everywhere would be a pain, but yes, feedback please.

Other than snow/ice, what else can siping improve? I think we are all convinced it works but still leery of any downsides for four season work.

Thanks. I can tell you though that I had to take a drive yesterday to pull out a friend up the road and the one little negative is that they throw a lot more snow when running in high range. I keep dreaming of a cab but for now my face shield and snow googles will have to do.

I have asked others for their results long term and everyone says that they hold up just fine long term. When you consider the hardness of the rubber on the R4's, I have no concerns of chunking. Especially not how I use my tractor.

Hi Daugen,
I didn't think it would make the tires harder on the lawn, I was hoping that the grooving might be softening the front edge of the lugs, which could reduce damage to the lawn while still retaining better traction in mud and dirt than R3s.
Thanks,
Todd
