Hey Allycatdad;

What worms. You mean where you live worms and crawlers dig into the snow? O.K., stupid question. Maybe good for some laughs.

Here's what I did to my brand new Krawlers... I can't comment on how much it helped traction as I never ran them un-grooved... but I am amazed at how well they work in snow. I used to get stuck if I plowed over the edge of the driveway... now I back up without spinning at all.

All you need to remember is that snow sticks to snow... in deep snow large voids squish the snow down and pulls you ahead. On hard packed you need little voids for snow to get caught in so that it can stick to the ground.

When you cut the grooves, it leaves a rubber "worm" that's gotta be picked outta the tire. Kids job.

We kept looking at them and thinking "these things ought to be good for something," But we could not figure out what they would be good for, so in the trash they went.

Hello; Very nice job. Could you show some pictures of the tools you used to do this and for siping as well?

Why do the grooves stop short of the of the end of the lug?

thanks, nicholas

Been meaning to do this for quite a while. Now that winter is just around the corner, I went ahead and ordered the knife and started siping away! Just took my time and enjoyed the experience.

Three more tires to go! I hope they work as good as everyone has described.

Ordered my grooving tool on Monday, came yesterday. Guess what I did today?:D

I started on the front tires by measuring 1/2" in from the outside edge of the lugs for a starting point. As long as you give the tool time to heat up properly it was pretty straightforward. I put one groove in the center of each lug then ran a groove all the way around the center of the tire. That part was easy as the tires are still fairly new so I could see where the mold met in the middle of the tire.

I went with a single groove on each of the rear tire lugs. The outside lugs were like butter, just put my azz behind it and the tool went right through. I used a very complicated technical method of marking where I wanted to start the groove on the rear tires. I took a flat carpenter's pencil, lined it up with the outside of the lug and used a sharpie to mark a line. The inside lugs took longer and required more arm work, but I got it done.
