I have an MTD Yard Machines 25Ton log splitter with an
Energy 92G control valve. The owners manual part number is 718-0481.

When the hydraulic cylinder retracts and hits the end of it's cycle, the control valve does
kick out soon enough and it puts a strain on the engine until it does.

Is there a way to adjust this valve?

Yes, there is a kick out setting.

Install a hyd gage and see what it is now, then adjust it to your satisfaction.

Is this accomplished by removing the relief valve plug and turning the adjustment screw?

How do I install a hyd gauge?

Thanks for the help.

Haven't done this before. Anything I should know before installing the fitting and making the adjustment?
Can the pressure adjustment be made while the engine is running and system is under pressure?
What pressure should I set it to?

I do not believe the detent is adjustable on the Energy brand control valves. There is a small oil passage in the center of the spool that could be clogged.

Worked on this today. Did not find a way to adjust the release.

Disassembled, greased and reassembled. Now it sometimes works correctly and the next time it delays longer??

Think I am going to add some small washer in the lever linage to take out some of the play..hoping this may help??

If you install a gage in the log splitter line, you will see what pressure the system is generating.

You can adjust the main relief valve by turning the adjusting nut to set the pressure.

The detent may have a set kick out pressure.

Quote: Pre-set kickout pressure of 750 psig to 2,000 psig

did you check to see if the return filter is good, high back pressures really plays havoc with the auto kick offs. If you are going to change it out stick with the Energy valve, these are a fine unit. we use a lot of them. it will be a direct bolt on, no modifying the mounting plate, changing out fittings ect. the cost difference will be taken up quickly by the extra work changing it to another brand. Jim-Where is the return filter located? Any advise on how to check it?

If you don't see a return filter, you probably don't have one.

You might mess with that valve and never get it right.

If that is old fluid, what color is, if clear/amber/red, good, if milky not good.

Return filters.

I have a Wix brand spin on filter mounted on top of the reservoir.

Is the Wix considered a return filter?

It is probably a return filter, but to be sure, follow the hose back to the out port.

If you decide to replace the control valve care must be taken when chosing a valve for the MTD or other splitters where the valve is attached directly to the cylinder. With the Energy valve the port nearest the handle connects to the retract port of the cylinder where on the Prince valve the port farthest from the handle is attached to the retract port of the cylinder.

Could the problem be the filter (not many hours on it) and what is a good Brand to buy for a replacement?

How can I identify which is a return hose on the splitter?

How can I identify which is a return hose on the splitter?

There are usually two hoses connected to the tank. One goes to the pump and the return is the other one.

Iv read the thread. Time should not be a factor on detent kick out - only pressure. - The strain on the engine should be just a fraction of a second. Are you running the engine at near the system rated RPM to enable full pump flow? Does it get worse or better as the fluid warms up?
