Buying a new GN trailer: tilt or deckover?

/ Buying a new GN trailer: tilt or deckover? #21
I've started to look around for a 20+5 dual tandem as well. They are not as common, it seems, as the single wheel tandem 20+5's. And are a little more costly.

Around here it's harder to find a used dual tandem because people just don't sell them. Seems to be more used low deck trailers because of dissatisfied owners wanting to change.

I shopped on Craigslist using SearchTempest Online Classifieds Search - All of craigslist, eBay & more in one search. for 6 months before I found my trailer south of Wichita. 5 hour drive one-way from me. As I was hooking onto it the second buyer was driving in. Gotta be quick and carry cash. The ad was 1 hour old when I found it. Went that day.

I looked at 3 frogs before I found a prince. One seller talked about how good his trailer was, I drove 2 hours, it had some old steel stacked on it with small trees growing out from under it, hadn't moved in several years, one wheel/hub assembly laying on the deck. Good part being I was only there about 5 minutes.

That's where I learned I don't drive without pictures first. And you learn to ask subtle questions such as are you pulling it now??, how are the brakes??, holes in the deck??,,,, etc., etc. :)

Seems like that's what I'm going to have to do, too. Sit and wait for a deal to pop up.

Haha! That darn Santa!

I like that trailer, that's a nice set up. Getting 2K more on the axles and another 2K GVWR is pretty nice!

I just sold a deck over beavertail trailer, bumperpull, fourteen feet flat and three foot tail. I am looking for something smaller but vow I will never buy any trailer that isn't galvanized! One winter up here and a trailer looks ten years old!

One friend has had so many trailers and most have had fenders that ALWAYS seem to get in the way of what we are doing/loading.

My other friend who made the claim about a tilt deck being hairy, had issues with getting off his tractor or skid steer while inclined. Somehow he said that he almost managed to bend the trailer. Don't remember what he was doing. It's also hard to load numerous peices of equipment on a tilt bed. Now he built this quite awesome galvanized deckover GN trailer with ramps that fold up and make the back flat with the rest of the trailer. I thought I had a picture, but can't find it.

One thing about trailers. There is always some compromise to be made it seems.

I found some pictures. The guys old trailer is the black one. I only included a picture of the back of his new one (the one he built) as the total view has his phone number and I didn't confer with him. He is one talented guy!

I have had both and like the tilt by far better. Nothing like at the end of a 90 + degree day no ramps to fight. Mine does have a fixed area 8 foot long it gives me the ability to load 2 pallets or attachments. Biggest downfall I see to a tilt is if you had to haul a lot of long material and tractor at same time, very hard to do. I would look at Kaufman trailers as some of the above are Kaufmans with different decals on them. They build a lot for other manufacturing places who buy them cheap and then put there decals on them.
Hope this helps

Good thoughts, thank you. Yeah, that Kaufman that Xfaxman posted a link to yesterday looked nice! Good price, too!

I have had both tilt and deckover. Tilt trailers are great for loading rolling equipment. Super simple and quick to load and unload. Deckovers shine when it comes to wider equipment and cargo. If I only hauled my skid steer and tractor I would still have my tilt. However, I now haul a small dozer and bundles of lumber. The fenders of the tilt would not allow me to load the dozer and made it difficult to forklift load and unload lumber.

Essentially what I am hearing you all say so far is... get one of each! :D
