Toyota Tundra to get Cummins 5.0L V8 Diesel too

As far as I am concerned tow rating is determined by frame durability and axle rating. My Duramax might be rated to tow 16,000 pounds as it is but I'd have no problem pulling 26,000 or more pounds as long as the frame and axles could handle the weight. I'm in no rush when I'm towing heavy. If I can't reach the speed limit on the highway when I'm towing heavy, no big deal. I tow less than a third of the time that I drive my truck. I need the Diesel capability for when I do tow but I also want maximum fuel economy for those times when I'm not towing. Having said all of that I think that this 5 L Cummins V-8 diesel would be an excellent three-quarter ton and up truck motor, while I'd rather have something like the 3.0 V6 VM Motori diesel in a half ton truck.

I disagree. The 5.0 leaves room to grow and will offer a 12,000# tow rating plus. Nissan is already building 3/4 ton vehicles and this engine will be a competitor for 10 years or more.

The Ram's little diesel is maxed out or nearly there and can't compare to the gas offerings. As a grocery getter or fleet vehicle it may work but I can't think of a single person I know that would buy a truck with a 7500# tow rating. Every one I know has a truck.

Chris

I think we were saying the same thing here. I wasn't saying the 5.0 should be a 4.0, I was saying the 3.0 should be a 4.0 so IT would have room to grow. Yea the 5L Cummins will surely have room to grow when it hits the market.

One thing for certain, there will be choices in the diesel market in the next year or two. Good to see some REAL choices coming around. It will be interesting to see where the majority of the money goes for the 1/2 ton market.

That could be a very nice vehicle!! Now the big question is will all these new vehicles help cause industry to invest in the supply chain for diesel fuel and drive the prices down??? Some claim the more diesel vehicles will actually reduce fuel prices - I sure hope so!!

Knowing my luck it will raise it by causing a shortage of fuel, pipelines, and station pumps. I own 2 diesels currently.

Put me in the diesel is a tough sell camp. If i did not tow 16,000# 35 weekends a year 120 miles round trip up a 7% grade I would own all gas. Right now they still are too expensive to own and operate.

I have always heard that many of the of the Tundra parts are almost up to 2/4 ton specs now. Does not look like much of a stretch to see a 3/4 ton engine in one. 5 liters does seem a bit large if you are shooting tor economy.

Thats what I am figuring, the price will go way up with my luck!

Diesels are expensive to run and I could get by with a gas truck very easily but just love the extra grunt pulling. I am amazed how easy it is to tow with a ¾ diesel compared to my old Tundra. Don't get me wrong, the Tundra is a great truck, just the Cummins and heavier suspension in my ¾ ton makes it a all new game!

This is great for Indiana, home of Cummins. It's great for the imports also. They will now be taken seriously. Not that they shouldn't have to date. In my eyes the F150, Tundra, Titan, Ram, and GM trucks are how they stack up currently.

This is very bad news for the domestics and their diesel plans. Especially Ram.

What makes you say that? Look at the sales figures;

Toyota sells roughly 1/3 what Dodge/Ram sells, even combined with the Tacoma they're still in 4th place. Nissan isn't even in the game. The Tundra's been around for about 20 years now, and still isn't what I'd call a player. I really doubt adding a diesel version is gonna change things all that much.

I have owned Fords and I have a Ram now. I notice that once someone gets a Tundra, they stay with them, unless they need a dualie.

I truly believe ALL current 1/2 ton trucks have majorly inflated tow numbers IMHO.
handling is about three things: Suspension, suspension, suspension !! Good shocks and a rear rollbar. But that makes the rear end bounce when driving unloaded so half tons dont have it and therefor dont tow as steady as a 3/4 or 1 ton..... Aftermarket parts such as a RideRite kit can greatly improve the handling when loaded, whilst having no negative effects on the comfort when empty (mostly the airbags improves vibrations as well.)

Who said it was a half ton? I think its clear Toyota wants to build roughly one truck to compete against but an F150 and F250. There is nothing about the current tundra or one that will come with a 5L diesel that says Im supposed to be a 1/2 ton truck. If anything Toyota is clearly makeing the statement that they are moving the stick in terms of what qualifies for the old classificiations of half ton 3/4 ton etc. With the current Tacoma comming close to what was called a 1/2 ton in the early 90s and the Tundra being more.

fwiw & imho,
I could be a Toyota Customer the next time around... ODDLY enough they were the only choice other than Ford that I've ever considered. EVEN when I was buying my 05' F350 Crew Cab, 4x4, with the 6.0 PSD. It makes for a great tow truck but I still wonder about buying the Toyota.

That said Toyota is not going to corner the half to one ton market with one truck. It will be a half *** conglomeration of the three. A Cummins Diesel in a Tacoma is a winner, however, it is not nor will it ever be a Super Duty F350...fwiw & imho

Regards, Matt.

Yet another that has my attention. For the time being my 08 Duramax will have to do. I had considered Toyota at one time, but seeing the Tundras around make me think they look light and very chinsey or cheap! Just my opinion, and I am not one that likes any bling on a truck so I don't know what makes them appear that way to me.

I would always wait for a vehicle to be out a few years before I bought one anyway.

My 2007 Tundra CrewMax Limited 4x4 with ARE cap, and me in it weighed just over 6k pounds empty on the scales recently....not exactly "light".
