I could buy gas at sams club, I just have to drive out of the way to get it. Gas @ sams is usually 3-4 cents cheaper than the lowest priced stations. I could also drive out of the way and get diesel at walmart (murphy oil co. gas station) diesel at walmart is about 3-4 cents cheaper than the lowest priced stations. Sams (here) doesn't sell diesel..
Exactly - if you estimate how much gas you burn by going out of the way (& back), is it outweighed by the lower price? Usually not, depending how far 'out of the way' is.
Let's say I go 10 miles (one way) out of the way to 'save' 4 cents a gallon. In winter I get about 15 mpg, so both ways = 20 miles I use about a gallon & a third to get there that I wouldn't have for the higher price gas stop. At $3.359 per gallon, I consumed $4.48 of fuel. If I fill up 15 gallons, 4 cents cheaper is 'saving' 60 cents. So net 'savings' is I paid $3.88 EXTRA to go to the out-of-the-way gas station to 'save' 4 cents!!
A lot of folks don't think rationally - they 'see' the 'savings' & don't consider what they are doing. :confused2: Psychologically it makes 'em feel better.
