EPA issue ban on wood stoves

Maybe, limiting cruising is the answer... either by number or to certain days.

There was a time when Grandfathering was the norm... these days, laws are passed that create real burden and harm.

It's like my 63 year old friend... Husband and wife excavation contractor for 40 years.

Immaculate dump truck, backhoe and trailer... put out of business because he was told he needed to repower or cease operation... he went out of business.

All of these types of regs simply put the little guys out of business... it's not a problem for the big guys.... the local utilities hiked rates because they had to replace equipment... it's the law.

Funny how a guy can support his family, take pride in his work... be 100% fully compliant and with a stroke of a pen he's out of business.

I just love to hear the people who talk about the technical side of this. They sound so smart and smug. lol Like they are changing the world or something.Pretty sad really .these are our future leaders and have no clue. One good thing about this is my 5 spare stoves will bring a pretty penny.

yup so sad and clueless, and then have a memory too? Terrible.

….. but 5 stove spare stoves; I had no idea! :D
BTW who do you listen to on the radio?

I bet there's a lot more to that story

No, there isn't.

This has put many owner operators out of business...

It's been a hot topic here in the SF Bay Area and affects just about any Diesel powered equipment 50hp and larger used in business.

Backhoes, Dozers, Chippers, over the road trucks.

There was a huge backlash on emergency equipment like fire trucks and the reg was amended to exempt government agencies.

I'm facing the same reg for the emergency Diesel Genset at work... Onan, Turbo Cummins installed in 1995 with 330 hours.

The for profit hospital has been put on notice...

Here is just one example for trucks...

Important Reminder for 2006 and Older Model Year Engine Drayage Truck Owners!

Owners of class 7 & 8 drayage trucks with 2006 and older model year (MY) engines must have replaced their engines by 12/31/2013 to meet compliance requirements. Please be advised that two compliance options exist, which enable drayage trucks to operate for different lengths of time.

2006 and older engines with Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) retrofits are no longer compliant at the Ports and Rail Yards.

SOLUTIONS
The following are compliance options that ensure a drayage truck can continue to operate in 2014 and beyond.

Replace the truck or engine with a:

2007-09 model year engine for compliance until 12/31/2022. Starting 1/1/2023, the truck or engine must be upgraded with a 2010 model year or newer engine or,
2010 model year or newer engine; truck will be fully compliant.

Add bankrupt too. Contractors hooked on state contracts have to diversify, and compete with all the other guys in the real market.

I've been following this thread for a while and it's an interesting discussion. Wood smoke pollution IS a real problem. Did you know that the city with the worst air quality in the USA is... Fairbanks, Alaska? And 50-70% of the pollution is wood smoke. Here's one article about it:

Most people think of Alaska as one of the last great escapes from urban pollution. But they have not spent a winter in Fairbanks or the nearby town of North Pole, where air-quality readings in November were twice as bad as Beijing's.

From: Fairbanks chokes on wood stove pollution in battle to stay warm - Los Angeles Times

I certainly don't want to see wood burning banned or curtailed... but neither can we have rural and frontier areas approaching or getting worse than the air quality of Beijing. It seems like making wood stoves cleaner and more efficient has to be the answer, that lets people keep burning but makes a dent in the resulting air pollution.

I have been there, the inversions they get really trap in any and all smoke
