XP is coming to an end on 4-8...What to do?

I am running XP at the moment and do not plan on switching.

If anything I am planning to downgrade to my older Windows 2000 PC if I can when I change internet suppliers, and thus use a different router which should support Win2k.

As long as you have a good anti-virus programme installed you shouldn't have any worries.

If you are going to upgrade though I would recommend Windows 7 as that is what I use at work and it is a good system.

You can't beat the oldies though, that's what I say. Heck, I'd still be using Windows 98 if I could!!!

How does your computer connect to the router? If its connected via a wired or wireless network connection (ie: anything but USB) AND you are using a router with a firewall, it shouldn't matter what operating system you use. It should get a address from DHCP, domain name info from DNS and it shouldn't matter what OS you are running.

At the moment I am using a wireless dongle for my internet and thus the connection thereof is USB unfortunately.

I am going to be switching to ASDL connection in the next few weeks hopefully so then it'll be a standard router which will connect to the PC via ethernet cable.

Have used XP on one older desktop for some time and a newer desktop and laptop run Vista, which I have nothing but praise for. Upgraded my 7 month old laptop from Windows 8 to 8.1 recently and cannot really tell much difference. What galls me isn't an OS but rather the sites that are LOADED with worthless crap ads that do nothing but cause problems. Banning all ads from all sites would do wonders for the stability of any OS.

Got a message via Microsoft Security Essentials saying it will not be secure after 4/8. So I uninstalled MSE and replaced it with Avast, problem solved! :drink:

I suspect Microsoft is the one that will be writing the viruses that show up on your XP machine just to ensure that you have to buy Windows 8 or a computer with it on it.

Seems like they updating security essentials for another year. My mother computer is an XP and I am going to ride that bronc until it bucks me off.

I was thinking the same thing. In early March, MS pushed to its XP users a "High-priority" Windows update titled "Windows XP End of Support Notification (KB2934207)". The update consists of a popup window informing you that XP support ends on April 8. But the update has a size of 504 KB so you gotta think that there is a little more in there than just a popup window.
