Here's an updated pick of the kitchen. Just have a few stones to place at the bottom of the window sill and some mortar to run next to the countertops now that they are finally installed. The range hood was actually made for an island. I decided to use it instead of a standard wall hood so we could float it and expose more of the stone.

Just about anything you are capable of doing helps. Painting and staining would be one area. We hired one person to help us paint. By paying one person on an hourly rate along with free labor from myself and wife we were able to paint the house at a fraction of hiring it out. We're doing all of the staining ourselves, cut, stained, and installed all of the tongue and groove with the exception of the great room. Running your own cat5, cable, video, etc is a fairly simple job as well. I did the entire house with one helper in an afternoon. Even electric isn't too bad if you have someone licensed to help with questions. We saved a ton by wiring our own.

Thanks. I was thinking of painting and staining. I though about low voltage but I have never done it before. Are reading books or youtube vids the best way to learn if I don't know anyone that can show me? I am not afraid of trying something new, just don't want to mess it up, and have to pay to redo it, negating any savings.

The kitchen looks like it belongs in a magazine. Who designed it?

Thanks Eddie. The design was our own, including the lighting and finishing on the remainder of the house. I'm too cheap to pay someone else to tell me what I like. :) Going into the build we had a pretty good vision of what we wanted. The only major change was switching from stained alder to painted cabinets. I was worried about getting too much wood in one place since we are doing hardwoods in the kitchen. I wasn't sure about our switch, especially using two different cabinet colors and two different slabs of granite however we are really happy with the end result. The hardest part of the design so far for me has been lighting. I really struggled with the lighting side of the build, especially placement and amount.

I like your choice of cabinet colors. One of the things that disappoints me in log homes and homes with a lot of wood is it tends to blend together and nothing stands out. It all looks kind of the same and becomes boring. Your choices in colors and textures really gives it that WOW factor!!!!

Agreed. Very nice build and I enjoyed following it. Well worth the read. Check out tkappeler's build as well.

Tom - as I'm getting close to starting trim work I went back through your build to look at your trim you made. I really like what you did and may have to send credit your way as I may end up copying yours.

Jeremy

Better to give credit to my wife, Beth. :D

I was looking back through the thread to see pictures of the outside. Have you finished it yet or has the weather slowed up this portion of your house? I love what you have done on the inside and will try to incorporate some of the same things into our barn remodel project. Rick

The weather has not been good for building outside. Siding, stone, and shingles are still on hold. This has been the longest and coldest winter I can remember. We were scheduled to finally have shingles delivered and placed on the roof Monday with install to begin Tuesday. I just left the house and it is 26 degrees and snowing. Weather looks good by mid-week.

WOW!
That looks awesome and this is just one room. There's still an entire house. I'm excited and it's not even mine lol.
