I think they would work, they put out much more force than human arms.

It takes alot of force BECAUSE of the shock... that's the bad part. The good part is that is slows the dump action once it gets going instead of slamming back.

Well she's all painted
Filled it to about 2/3. 100 round shovel fulls.
It didn't go well at all. First off the little "V" I put behind the hitch was acting as a ramp on stumps and rock and lifting the hitch right off the ball. I cut it off and went for a 2nd load. When I dumped it the hitch came right off the ball... this was after tightening the hitch... but just a half turn of the nut. I'll tighten it some more. Also, the load doesn't slide out. There's too much radius of the tank left. I hoped it wouldn't come to this, but I'll have to cut some out and put it on hinges. I kept what I cut off, so I could put some back and make it a little higher... though I think I'm at the limit for the fourwheeler I'm using.

How much more dump angle can you get if you take off the shock?

90deg, but that's not the problem. I'm at 65deg which is way more then most factory dump trailers. I thought I may have to cut in a small tailgate during initial design/ build. I just hope the 2" vertical lips don't hold up the material... I'll start with just cutting out the little "gussets" above the angle iron and seeing if that helps.
