I shoot 8" and 12" targets suspended from chains out to 550yds and I can always hear them "ring" and see them swing.

At a far enough distance it wouldn't be an issue.
Bang---pause---clang

If the distance is not far enough you don't get the pause.
The metal you shoot at also affects the sound as well direction of wind.

Saw this over the weekend. Looks like a pretty cool setup if you have the $.
Bullseye Camera Systems - The Ultimate Target Camera, Shooting Camera and Long Range Shooting Camera

For target viewing I use either a Leoupold spotting scope or the wireless video camera that I use on my RC aircraft, from boostervision.com they cost a lot less than the one you linked.

I would not suggest using it to view hits on steel unless you put it behind bullet proof glass.

Jean, I will check on the sensor.

What about a paddle with 4 sides rotating on a pole? When you hit one, another one rotates up. Paint each paddle a different colour so you can see when it has rotated.

That's one of the most creative ideas I've come across.
Wonderful picture as example as well.
How would you get the paddles to stop at the right spot?

They won't, they will spin and stop at random places with random colors showing, but what difference would that make? You would still be able to see the change of colors and the motion..

I would prefer shooting at the face of each paddle, avoiding weird angles.

Ok, rifle target version 2 has a little plastic tab that allows the paddle to spin, but then slows it and stops it in the right place. Kind of like how a hockey card in your bike spokes (for that awesome engine sound when you were a kid) would be placed. :)

You could also make sure the axle was on a good bearing, and then weight one of the vanes so that is is heavier and will always stop with that vane pointing down.
