Just did a YouTube search for "ecoboost timing chain" and it resulted 3 videos. One was just audio, one by someone who was oblivious to engines.

As popular as YouTube is plus the more than 500,000 ecoboost trucks on the road plus the diehard V8 gear heads hoping for ecoboost failures......A statistician would expect a sum of more than 1 legitimate video. Really?

The diluted fuel issue in cold climates has a TSB to correct the issue.

Every engine from every manufacturer will have its individual issues. If the issues are major and widespread, they will not be made, desired or purchased in the future.

Just do a GOOGLE search.

LOTS of discussion on the issue.

X2. Actual info is always useful and greatly appreciated.

"Sadly those attempts to fix the intercooler problem exasperated the fuel oil contamination problem ... "

Exacerbated is the word you were looking for: make (a problem, bad situation, or negative feeling) worse. I'm sure the Ford engineers and bean counters are exasperated. :)

Exacerbated, yes.

I have a 2011 ecoboost F150 and have been following the problems from the beginning. The issue has been emerging as our understanding of issues grows. As I understand it the heart of the issue is that Ford took a big-block 3.1 diesel design and converted it into the 3.5L gasser. Good idea as it meant the gasser's button end was over-built, and tough. The down side is that the large block engine takes longer to warm up. As an example: my F150's 3.5L takes two or three times longer to warm up than the 3.5L in my Infiniti. Trucks and cars different animals but there is the comparison.

Ford, like everybody else uses short-skirt pistons that are tough and light but also tend to grow as they warm up. When the engine isn't warmed up, the engine runs richer and some of the fuel gets past the rings and into the crankcase. Once warmed up, the PCV system should scavenge fuel vapors back through the engine to be burned. The trouble is that the PCV system cannot scavenge all of the fuel when trucks operate in cold climates and do not warm all the way up and then run long enough to burn off any fuel contamination. Worse, thanks to remote start, piles of us use the remote start to warm up our trucks in the winter. 10 or 20 minutes of running rich while warming up under no load to accelerate the warming up process. Then, after all of this idling warming up, we make a 10 or 15 minute trip, get out, the truck cools down a bit while we're doing our thing, we get back in, drive a semi-warmed up engine another 10 or 15 minutes and we're done.

Short trips are always hard on engines, but the EB has an issue with too much fuel contamination.

The fuel contamination is the problem, thus Ford is now testing catch cans as a cold weather solution.

The stop gap solution is the TSB to install a new, better engine heater that when used, could cut down the warm-up time.

Have you heard that Ford is giving away a German Shepherd pup with every new F-150 sold? That way the driver has someone to walk home with...

Q. How do you double the value of a Chevy?
A. Fill up the gas tank.

Q. What is found on the last two pages of every RAM owners manual?
A. The bus schedule.

What? No love for Toyota or Nissan? They are 4th and 5th, and deserve their own jokes.

Just to make you happy........

A guy walks into a auto parts shop and says "I'd like a gas cap for my Tundra." The owner thinks for a few seconds and replies "OK, that seems like a fair trade."

A Texan was talking big in a bar one night about how much money he
had, how many women he had been with and how much land he owned. A young man, growing tired of all the big talk finally asked the Texan, "Just how much land do you actually own"? The Texan tipped back his cowboy hat
and said to the young man " Well sonny let me put it to ya like this, I can get in my pickup at sunrise, drive all day long, skip lunch and still not get to the other side of my property by sundown". The young man shot back
quickly, " Oh yeah, I know what you mean, I used to own a Titan truck
too"!

Thanks for the jokes. Those were all good.

Yea those were good jokes.

Sounds like Ford need to put a heater in the oil pan that is active when the engines running and below normal operating temps. Warm oil will lube better, and everything would work as designed.

I'm not a hater of any brand, or design. I like that Ford is a leader in these kind of designs. Just like I'm glad Ram added their 3.0L diesel to the 1500 series. It's time to shake up the truck industry a bit. Personally got sick of seeing the new midsize truck offerings with a whopping 2 mpg advantage over a full size.
As was mentioned EVERY brand that has ever introduced a new design has issues to iron out. One thing most people never even try to consider is cars sold in the US undergo more extremes than cars sold in just about any country in the world. From 12,000ft altitudes, to below sea level temps of 120+ to hot 100+ dry weather and sub zero salt laden roads, and folks that seriously can be all from one month of driving around. Add to that we expect 250,000 miles out of it and the first 100,000 trouble free, and it's a tall order. Then throw the EPA crap on top of it all and it's a engineering challenge like no other.

No manufacturer can forsee all problems in all situations. Just be thankful it's not like cell phones. Ever get a buggy cell phone? Their solution is, "Down load the update. Oh that didn't work, well we have a new model out now that corrects that problem, it starts at $495 unless you want to renew your plan."

When these issues occur, the have to first understand WHY, before they can fix it. Once they do fix it, I'm sure something else will pop up. At least the tie rods aren't falling off cause some pot smoking dufus forgot to tighten them down. Not bashing GM's, I own one.
