Ford F-450 with 6.4 diesel

So, what are they now putting ethanol in diesel fuel too. :D

Reminds me of all the issues years back with ethanol causing fiberglass gas tanks on boats to delaminate.

I would not be surprised if it's not the Bio Crap.

Ultra low sulfur diesel fuel is what caused the corrosion in (large) storage tanks. It is from cross contamination with ethanol gasoline fuel. If I understand it right, ethanol gasoline contains a type of algae that will thrive on diesel fuel. When fuel supplies are switched from gasoline storage to diesel storage, some gas is left over in the tank. The algae thrives in ULSD and as the algae goes through its life cycle the pH drops to 2.5 or so and stuff starts corroding. Previously the sulfur in diesel fuel acted like a biocide and killed the algae (from ethanol gas). That's my understanding of the diesel corrosion issue.

I believe this is correct. I've seen marine applications where algae was in the diesel. Bad deal.

So sad, it's not just Ford but most OEMs are having issues, choose your poison then pay, Fred

Everybody has issues but combining the 6.0 and 6.4 problems Ford has everyone else beat in the diesel problems department. I would never even consider buying a ford diesel unless is was the old 7.?? liter. We have 2 of the 6.0's where I work and just ordered a used 550 with a 6.4. Had nothing but problems with the 6.0 and I'm already expecting the same form the 6.4 after reading about the motors. No idea why people keep buying them after all the problems.

Just my $0.02, but my 6.4L has been trouble free for it's 52k+ miles. I did have the radiator replaced due to a leak, but the engine itself has been trouble free. Fuel mileage is nothing to write home about, but with my short trips, I expect that. I can get 20MPG on long trips, and 10-11 towing my fifth wheel. It tows my fiver with ease, whether it's on flat ground or in the hills of the Ozarks.

However, if Ford puts an EcoBoost in the F250, this will probably be my last diesel.

I find it pretty hard to believe that anyone with formal training in oil related bio-chemistry would not have been able to accurately predict these consequences.

I think you've posted elsewhere tpw..... but my lousy memory can't recall......

Do you add any diesel treatments routinely to your fuel ?

I just sold my old camper and my 7.3 Powerstroke...
Did not really want to sell it but did not need as much truck since I was not pulling a 5th wheel anymore...
I went out and got an 07 Chevy with a 6.0 Vortec...
With the emissions issues on diesels I am over with them too...
The 7.3 is a good engine...

I do add Power Service Diesel Kleen on occasion, but not regularly. I have used less than a gallon of it in 26k miles, so it's not very regular at all.

I try to run a tank of biodiesel through it whenever I can (the nearest station is 35 miles away, but I do go by it every now and then). I seem to get 1+ MPG better on the tank AFTER a tank of bio for whatever reason.
