I've always been interested in growing "Asparagus" for profit. Can you tell me if a good profit can be made growing asparagus ? And how much would need to be planted
to achieve this goal ?
Thank you,
duke
I don't have the numbers right in front of me, but have done a lot of reading and believed that it could be a worthwhile venture... especially since nobody around here is raising it to sell. This link

they have alot or ideas and info about of growing normal and not so normal look at the money part if considering Asparagus not too much to be made .
Agricultural Alternatives

could make me reconsider though... perhaps there is a reason why nobody does it around here?

i have 300' of asparagus that i grow to sell at the farmers market. i sell it for $8/lb. this quantity always sells out. asparagus require insect control. the asparagus beetle will make your crop unsaleable if you don't control it.

What do you spray with? I'm not organic by any means, but I do try reduce my pesticides and use the least toxic available.
For the last two years in my personal garden I've managed to get by using permethrin.

I've read about people planting winter rye over their asparagus to keep weeds down; then mowing it in spring. Have you tried this?

Weeds are also a problem with any crop; and I've decided to pass on the Roundup. I've been plowing, letting it bake in the sun for 2 weeks, then disc... this weekend I'm planting buckwheat Buckwheat a good summer cover crop for home gardens | Oregon State University Extension Service | Gardening. This fall I'll turn it under and plant winter rye.

I know that it needs deep soil; I can bury my plow to the top of the share (16") before going below the topsoil. Hopefully this will be deep enough.

ACTUALLY WHEN I WAS YOUNG THE FERTILIZER WAS STRONGER AND THE INSECTICIDES WE'RE POWERFUL. THE 10-10-10 CALLED GEANURE BACK THEN SMELLED STRONGER AND GREW ESPECIALLY BETTER CORN. NOW THE REGUALAR 10-10-10 IS LOADED WITH FILLER AND LIME COMBO AND IS WEAKER. NOW I DO USE MANURE AND COMPOST FOR VINE CROPS MIXED WITH A LITTLE FERTILIZER TO GROW A GOOD CROP. WHAT HAS HAPPENED IS FERTILIZER AND FUNGICIDE ARE BEING CONTROLLED BY THE ENVIRO-WHACKO'S AND OBAMMER TYPE EPA EXTREMEST.
SEEMS LIKE TO ME AS A FULL TIME FARMER OF 50 YEARS THAT THE ORGANIC HOAX IS MOSTLY STARTED BY YANKEE CITY FOLKS WITH SCARE TACTICS. I GUESS IF YOU USE SPRAYS AND GRANULER FERTILIZERS WITH COMMON SENSE LIKE OUR PARENTS DID YOU WON'T GET A BUG IN YOU'RE BALONEY SANDWICH--BY THE WAY WE COUNTRYFOLK LOVE BALONEY SANDWICH'S WITH TOMATO'S ON TOP--LORD HAVE MERCY!!

Hey man, I'm not trying to diminish your participation in agriculture, and I respect the amount of time you've been farming.

However, humans have been farming for about 10,000 years. They farmed organically until about 1945, so, yes organic practices may be new to you, but it's the way it used to be, no getting around it.

Also, please keep the politics and capital letters out of here.

You ought to check in to using your land for a solar farm. I don't know what is involved in having one built on your land, but they are becoming prevalent in my area.
