How do you store you logging/tow chain?

This is where I store chain, tow strap, hitch pins, shackles, and a few tools.

Couple pieces of slotted angle iron bolted to the ROPS with U bolts, and a cheap Harbor Freight steel toolbox bolted to this. I lined the inside with waffled rubber toolbox drawer liner to keep stuff from making too much noise.

Ha, not to worry Shutesbury. Look closely at the picture and you will see he actually stores his chain on the floorboard. The PVC tube is for looks.

Nice big toolbox, but doesn't it get in the way of turning around and watching whatever implement is behind you?

For example:

I spend all my time turned around and looking down behind me.

It's not too bad. It's low enough that I when I look back and put my arm up on it (like if you were sitting on the couch and wanted to turn around to see what's behind you) I can see most of my box blade.

I used a piece of aluminum unistrut that we had a work, and bolted it to the loader brackets , through two pre existing holes. I then bolted the PVC to the unistrut with two spring nuts. A bit over kill but I had the hardware.

I need to find some edge moulding, the top edge where I cut the end off the tank is going to slice somebodys hand (likely mine, I end up ground man most of the time when chains are used!) Even though I did my best to file/deburr the cut edge... it still sharper than is safe.

Get some 1/4" round stock, bend into a loop the same size as the can's sharp edge. Tack weld on, paint. Nice, tough, rounded edge.

Good idea... I will keep my eye out for some material to use.

Sad thing is... we have yet to put a chain in it. Been using the forks to load logs on the saw mill and a nylon strap that is stored in the cab a few times... seems we need to find a dedicated tractor chain to leave in the can. Found a chain but its missing a hook on one end... told bossman he's gonna have to spend some of that mouldy money and buy some.

I also learned this trick here on TBN. Four inch dia. PVC bolted to the loader arm supports. I have chain in the left one and rope in the right one. Drain holes in the bottom.

How did you bolt them on? reach down from the top some and then up from the bottom before you cap the pipe? Nice ice chains bty I use duel ladder style on my bota good job.

Because of this forum I came up with my version of some one else's great idea. The upright for the loader assembly has holes in it at the bottom. I used six inch PVC thick wall pipe with a slip end cap, glued on of course. The cap has a drain hole in the bottom I drilled. Two large bolts go through the loader frame into two holes I drilled in the six inch pipe. At the top I fabricated a brace bracket out of flat stock. I am really pleased with it.

Nice work I need to attempt something I have seen a couple like yours and I think that way is the ticket. The only difference is I may do it to my Farmi winch instead. That is when I need my chains most often. For every day yanking I keep a 5/16 x 10 ? on the floor by the rear diff lock lever.,,,but it bugs me by moving around some.

I have a Kubota Grand L 4330 with the LA853 loader. I seal the tubes on the bottom of the loader frame with 4" pipe plugs and store my short chains in there. But, make sure that you plug the back side of these tubes as well, or your chains can slip out. Because of the tight space there I had to disassemble the inside plugs and reassemble them in place.

I have a short chain that I use all of the time. About 2 feet long, with grab hooks on each end, and a slip hook on a clevis. This fits securely in the tube on the left side, right where I need it as I climb off the tractor.

On my tractor there is a long tube brace between the loader arms but it is of a slightly larger diameter. You can sleeve this with 4 inch PVC and use standard pipe plugs there too.

I also fabricated a mount for an ammo can, fits perfectly for the location to the right of the floorboard. I never climb on the right side anyway because of the loader joystick so it was dead space. Haven't painted my mount yet because i am still brainstorming what else to add to it. I designed it to attach to the loader frame using holes that were already there.

I haven't read all the posts so I hope I haven't posted this before but I prefer steel over plastic and use old fire extinguishers with the top cut off as a containers. Pick any size that works and drill a hole in the bottom to let the water drain. Weld on any brackets or whatever is needed to mount to loader arms or wherever. CAUTION. Make sure the old extinguisher is not under pressure when you cut it! What I do is I put it in the band saw, start the saw and leave the building until the saw cuts into the cylinder just to make sure. The post by Red re using square tube is good and much the same but I didn't really think of it at the time.

Hate it when that happens. But don't give up. I once lost a Leatherman pocket tool somewhere on a buddy's 300 acre farm. A year or two later a hunter found it, good as new.

Been moving the past few weeks, and have really put the chain holder to use. It's so nice having the chains handy when they are needed yet out of the way and not on the floor when not being used.

Koua, that only works for stuff you DON'T want to find... like old fencing that winds up nice and tight on the spindle inside the stumpjumper pan... a nice chain you want back hides down low and burrows into the dirt faster than an earth worm hidin from a robin.

They do tend to blend in to the surroundings, especially if there is fresh dirt involved and older rusty chain. Yesterday I rounded up all my chains (that I could locate) and gave the hook ends a little color. Makes them easy to spot when they get away from you, orange is of course the preferred color but I had a part of a can of electric pink on hand so that got used. Plus, no-one would even think of taking them now.
