What grease gun are you using??

I use the adjustable right angle fitting on grease guns all of the time. I also have two sized taper tips to use when I have an odd zerk that is too small for my grease gun, or the zerk has broken off and I can't find one to fit. Good for chainsaw too. I make it a rule to never use a grease gun that I can't operate one handed.

I was 2 hrs. messing with my Lucas grease gun again today. I tried to reload it, I couldn't pull the rod back, half the grease was behind the plunger all gob up on the spring, what a mess. I clean what I could with my hands, able to put some in a can. I'd like to once find a grease gun that will work right, one time every time, its bad enough that a lot the grease doesn't get in the fitting, instead gets all through the plunger and spring, then its all over me and work bench, tied of wasting grease, and shop towels.

My grease gun is a lever type, its what I've always used. I see a lot of people like the pistol stile grease gun, seams like they'd be hard to operate with one hand. The lever style, I can grip it with 2 hands and force the grease in the fitting, if and when once in a blue moon the gun works right.

Is the plunger seal turned the correct way? some of them (probably most) the seal goes one way for tubes and the other way for bulk grease to account for the difference in the dimension of the bare barrel (bulk) and the cardboard tube (tubes of grease).

Well that's a good question, and I don't know, I guess I'll have to take it apart again and see if grease is all though the spring and plunger, does that mean the seal is wrong, I did notice when I had it apart the seal look like it was tapering towards the top. I didn't know it could be turned around, I don't know if I still have the instructions or not

The small grease gun with 3oz tube got a work out yesterday. Pretty sure I found all the zerts on the FEL and axels. While I was working on the tractor the wife was shopping so I had her stop at Tractor Supply and get a bigger gun and grease tube. Think I'm set except for a flex nozzle for the hard to reach fittings.

I admit to greasing the heck out of everything that slides, moves and rotates. Should be one slick (pun intended) running tractor :D

I've had this Craftsman air powered grease gun for 6 or 7 years and it's still working great...

Grease gun update.....

This gun is now in the scrap pile and I've replaced it with a conventional pump style...........

I have the same feeling. I wish I could find a grease gun that works every time I want to use it. I don't have the problem with grease getting all over and in the plunger, my problem is that I can never build up enough pressure to push the grease out. I've tried numerous pistol grip grease guns and they work great the first couple of times with a full tube, but once I use half the tube and let it sit for a few days or even weeks, it takes me 30 minutes or more to get grease flowing again. I'm tempted to look at the air powered ones. At least then I don't think my hands or arms would hurt after trying to grease my tractors and attachments.

were is that old thread at... about how to twist and untwist the end of the grease gun for correct fitting on a grease zerk, and getting the end un-stuck off a grease zerk. @twist it@

i just used a cheap, manual operated grease guns. the only real issue i have is...
1. the spring ya need to fight against, when ya load up a new grease cartridge.
2. i need to buy a quick connects, so i can swap between a metal extension, and a short hose, and a longer hose.

no real issue of not having enough muscle to operate them, actually fairly easy to use.... the only time it seems like i need a lot of muscle. is....
1. end is not on grease zerk correctly.
2. you have everything up in a bind. and the shaft/pin or what ever is fitting right up against the grease zerk hole (inside the connection area), and you need to turn on vehicle/tractor, etc.. and move things around some. or jack it up. and then it will take the grease nice and easily.

=======
not a real fan of extra wight from a battery operated greaser, or air driven unit... to much extra weight to drag around, and/or an air hose to deal with. by the time i fussed with either, i would most likely be already done on 2 passes around unit (1 for initial, 2 for double checking i hit them all)

also i have 2 grease guns, 1 for say backhoe, FEL, and the other for finish mower deck spindles, front wheel bears, PTO shaft U joints. keeping different grease in each one. using same grease for everything.... meh... there is a difference, you got slow moving stuff, and then high RPM's and/or temperature areas. completely different settings. using different grease = longer the grease stays were it needs be and keeps things lubricated.

I have a Bobcat pistol grip I got at my NH dealer. It works fine. I think the problem is me. My hands must be becoming weaker as I age because I really have trouble squeezing grease into some of the grease fittings. I don't want to neglect maintenance because it is getting harder to do. I was thinking about the Dewalt 18v grease gun. I already have a few Dewalt 18v tools and batteries and don't want to have to get into different batteries and chargers. They sell the bare tool for way less than the whole tool with battery and charger and I don't need/want any more batteries and chargers. As my batteries fail I will replace them individually as needed. Has anyone had experience with this unit?

I use a continuous duty pneumatic from blue point at work. Just give it a little air tool oil, and hold the trigger. Has a little twist knob on the end for purging air when changing cartridges. So no air lock. Just twist the knob, release the handle when loading, and twist the knob back closed. Wipe off the little bit of grease off the knob and your done. I use a pistol grip at the house from matco. I've had really good luck with both of them.
