How many have concealed carry permit to carry a gun ?

I was a federal LE guy for decades, now retired, I started the TX CHL process and stopped. I am very concerned the license will only put me on a list, and make me and my weapons a target of government someday in the future. HS.

I did not have a problem with taking the 8 hour class, in fact I learned some things in the class, and overall I think it was a good thing. As for the shooting portion, well it was pretty easy. In fact there were so many people at the range that day, that the single instructor could not get us all thru it in a timely manner, so the wife and I offered to run a bunch of the others thru and the Instructor signed off on them. The instructor was ex California Highway Patrol instructor, but I think the wifey and I were better at getting the people shot thru than he was. In any case we got them all qualified and no one had any extra holes in them, so we called it a good day. The only thing I didn't like was the money part. And I really did not care for the renewal fee a few years later at the Sheriff's office. They got a wad of money for doing basically nothing the second time. I think the fees are way too high.

If you're telling the truth about your background and experience, don't you think you're already on plenty of "lists"?:laughing: Most of us are, so one more wouldn't matter. I was fingerprinted by the US Post Office when I was 19 and started to work there, then I was 24 when I was fingerprinted by the Dallas Police Department when I started to work there, and I was 46 when I was fingerprinted by the Dallas FBI office and was accepted to go to the FBI National Academy. And now, I understand that the next time I renew my driver's license I'll be fingerprinted there.:laughing:

Maybe I'm just too old to be paranoid.:laughing:

Its not identifying me I am concerned with but, an an illegal government confiscation your name will come up first. Only the U.S. Marshal Service had more LE authority then we did, I measured drug busts in tons. HS

I've heard the "I don't want to be on a list." excuse and I place it in the same category as the "I'm not going to wear a seat belt because it might trap me in a wrecked car" argument. Is there a possiblity of it being true - absolutely. Is is likely - not at all.

I don't carry illegally, so your analogy doesn't fit me. In Texas I can have a handgun in the car without CHL. That's close enough to my person, I think I need to protect myself in almost any situation, away from home. HS

My wife and I both have concealed carry permits and have had for many years. Times have changed and major crime is no longer only occurring in the big cities, it is now hitting the small towns and rural areas. I have had the permit for years, but did not carry that often until the past couple years, now pretty much feel the need to carry all of the time.

The election of the new Governor in TX may change the rules in the great State of Texas next year to better the 2nd amendment and the Right to Bear Arms.

CCW may be unconstitutional in some eyes, but it's still the law. Until it's done away with it should be enforced and followed like other laws. It hasn't worked out to well for other groups who have decided the government was wrong and took it upon themselves to act the way they wanted. Whether they were right or wrong. The Indians. The draft dodgers. The tax dodgers. The piligimists. I'm sure there's more that escapes my uneducated mind.

As someone said its so easy to get a CCW. In mind there is 3 reasons someone wouldn't want one. There's something in the past that would make him ineligble, so why waste the $50 to let them know you have a gun. They are too lazy and feel they are above the law. So they take their patriotic stance and claim they shouldn't have to have one. Or as I sometime think it's a gun owner registry. How ever I think if and when the time comes for confiscation they won't stop with just CCW holders. They will use ATF forms hunting permits and anything else they can find. So you may only want to buy used guns from private partys and hunt on only your own land.

I have had a CCW almost since they became available. May be 20 years. I like to tell people it's my Good Character Card. I even use it when I need 2 IDs. I'm proud to have one. I don't however go around bragging about it at the wrong time. I have luckily used my weapon only one time to save my azz. Me and a friend were on a week long riding trip. We rode a lot of federal land where open carry is not permitted. We were riding one day and stumbled on some poachers and apparent horse thieves. I say thieves because they tried to get us off our horses. Had I not been armed we probably would not have come out well.

So as someone said we can't pick and choose which laws we abide. When I speed I fully expect to get pulled over and will accept the punishment. I don't think just because my tax dollars helped build the road or because I pay the policemans salary, that I can do what I want.
