I don't think he's going to sell that for the price he wants. You probably seemed hot to buy it and he can sense that so why not sit tight for a while?Same for you...either buy what you want for the price you want or don't buy it.

I go to a number of auctions and follow auction prices and do not feel the tractor you're looking at would bring the price he wants. While I don't know that model exactly, I'm thinking it would auction in the condition you described for $6,000 to $6,500 to $7,000 or so depending on time of year and crowd makeup. Possibly a little more if on the weekend in a suburban area but the lack of maintenance is a real red flag for hobbyists. That's the market around here.

Hi sixdogs,

I think you nailed it spot on. You offer great advice and I appreciate it. I will heed your advice. For a lower price I may be comfortable taking the gamble, but at his current price I need to sit tight. I will keep you guys posted what happens.

Thanks again,
Russ

"I don't actually have a dollar limit I would mind spending, I just want to be happy with the purchase and have something that will resell if need be."

"I did talk to him about the maintenance and of course he said he is religious about maintenance...ugh. Said he checked the oil and greased it before every use. Didn't really believe that and I don't get the feeling I can believe anything he says, I just have to go by my gut feel. Sort of buying a used car from a used car lot. He told me he bought the tractor from a friend that sells used tractors and that that guy had gone through it completely and serviced it before he bought it When I pointed out the gray hydraulic filters he just did not really have an answer."

Based on the two quotes above. Run...run like the wind.

I read about folks getting good deals at auctions but any time theres an auction within a few hours drive It either
1) doesn't have what I want
2) is on a day I cant go

Since I bought my B2710 (2004, 900hrs, rear hydr, $12,500) I've been monitoring craigslist, and another machinery auction site and I don't see the deals like some of you guys are getting. Its been 6 months and I've seen ONE better deal. A 2920 would sell in one day on craigslist in the NW, there would be no time to consult TBN.

Sodo,

I hear you there. I usually don't have much luck getting to auctions and when I do the prices get run up too high. The deals seem to be on stuff no one wants. Also, on craigslist it seems like the good deals get scooped up fast around here. Not a lot I want comes up on craigslist and if so they are usually asking so much, you are better off doing new. I will keep looking and hope to find a deal somewhere.

Take care,
Russ

Just for some perspective I paid $10,500 + tax for it. '08, FEL, with 112 hrs, and a Land Pride finishing mower. The tractor and finish mower looked very close to being brand new although they weren't.

Wow, that was a STEAL!! When I traded in my B2920 with 150 hours, I got $11,500 for it on the trade in (tractor, front loader, box blade), and I am sure the dealer was hoping to sell for $12-13K. So you did real well on price.

Russ, if you don't have budget issues, have you considered buying new? The reason I ask is that you sound like a conscientious buyer. If you think you will keep the tractor for a long time, buying new might make sense. But heck, the resale value on newer Kubotas is zoo good you might do OK even if you only keep for a couple years.

Around here to get a deal you have to find the seller who doesn't know about craigslist. The owners willing to spend all the money on dealer servicing probably know about craigslist and know how to get top dollar too. And even the dealer will give them more money than that. $9,000 might get you a decent tractor with no FEL. Up here, a B7100 from the '90s goes for $6-8,000. B21s with 1600 hours are in the 12,000 range once in awhile.

I looked for deals for 6 months, then there came a time where there were NO BX 23/24/25 on craigslist so I listed my BX24 (TLB) and sold it for $1000 more than I paid (and +160 hours of my use). Then I was in a rut (no tractor)! And there were no deals to be had either, so I bought used at a dealer. Bought a 900 hr 2004 2710 with rear hydraulics for $12,500, or he had a new 2920s for $20,000, or $22,000 with rear hydraulic 3-pt, $24,000 with tax. I can still resell my 2710 for about what I paid, and buy a new one, but the important thing is currently I have a tractor to get my stuff done.

Not having actually seen it, as you have (which makes a difference), I think I'da bought that one for $8,500 and if I later, found something better would put it on CL for $11,000. But that's all assuming Pacific NW prices and current local opportunity and not having seen it, just trusting that Kubota is good stuff. I think it's pretty seldom you get a good deal that has service records. Or an auction item with all service records.

Sixdogs recommends to sit tight for awhile. I understand that, I did for 6 months, and there was nothing and I got antsy. Kinda p***ses me off you have $8500 2920s hanging around like fruits on a tree and you know you can get a better tractor, makes me want to drive to TX and look around!

Yup, I think so ...

It might be fine ... but there's just too much bad vibes at this point ... particularly for something that one is looking to keep for the long haul.

Here's a thought: have the guy change the hydraulic fluids and filters... take the filters home and cut them open. If the insides aren't too filthy, and the fluid looked okay, then I wouldn't worry about that. The coolant issue would worry me more than the hyd. fluid. Have him drain it, and that will tell you a lot. Might still be a good machine, if you can be happy with it for under $10000 total invested. Like others have said, you don't see too many of them around here for those prices unless they are beat.
