Boy has this post gotten off track!
As we can see there are those who are passionate on both sides of the issue and no matter what side you are on there will be no changing your mind. I do support the second amendment but also believe there needs to be some regulation as there are some who have no right to have a weapon or access to one.
Most of us would agree that Newtown may never have happened if that troubled child did not have the ability to get his hands on a weapon. But as we agree to this lets put some blame on health care industry, department of mental health, and law makers for making it so difficult to place some with his problems to receive proper care.
Look back on Columbine High School, those boys wanted to kill and injure as many as possible there is not a doubt in my mind they would have done it with out guns, remember the secondary devices planted in the school and parking lot. If they didn't have access to guns I'm sure bombs would have been the weapon of choice.
I agree that guns are also used for suicides, I have seen it many times, but but with over 40 years working the street, 10 as a paramedic and 30+ years in law enforcement hangings by far out the number of gun suicides. If some one wants to die they will always find a method, some jump in front of cars, trains, jump off bridge or cliff.
I have also found that if someone wants to kill they will, even with out a gun. Knifes do a good job, so do bats, cars and the list can go on and on.
Killing is not normal, many of you who are in or have been in the military or law enforcement know this and also know 1% of the population is dangerous to the public.
I thank God every day that with the number of times I needed to take my service weapon out that I have not needed to use it. Yes I have a state permit, and I do carry at times, more now than in the past but only because I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it and hopefully never will need it. When I am home I know where it is and can get to it quickly but someone would have to get past my dogs first.
But rather than fighting over new laws start by enforcing the ones on the books and give a sentence where someone comes off the street for a crime and eliminate the revolving door, where the police and courts see the same criminals over and over. Make prison a prison not a retreat and badge of honor. Many times someone has been through the system before they kill.
