I guess you have to answer the question youself instead of asking others to answer it for you... when does society as a whole, decide what laws need to be enacted? So far, society has agreed that convicted felons are not to be trusted with firearm ownership. Nor are mentally ill people. Other than that, most folks agree that firearm ownership is O.K. and acceptable.

US are the common sense police. The key word there is "common", meaning average. You are on one fringe of common and Island Tractor is on the opposite fringe of common. The more you two keep arguing, the less people will listen to either of you. Both of you are beating a dead horse.

From what I've been reading here and the way I see it is IslandTactor seems to have a lot of book smarts but as for real "common scene" it's simply just not there for him and never will be not matter what is said to him. So yes...any discussion with IslandTractor is beating a dead horse.

It isn't that anyone is necessarily against "studying" firearms safety issues. It "is" the misuse of the study results to infringe upon the right to bear arms.

At the end of the day - Your freedom is more important than the risk(s). If a million people per day died from firearms, it would NEVER justify the attempts to destroy the right. Living in a free society comes with risk(s). If you are afraid to live free - I suggest China. Bye!

You are a bonafide gun fanatic. You are religious in your attitude towards guns and the second amendment. Very difficult to argue logically with someone about religion. I'll try anyways.

Nobody is flying around in a black helicopter looking for your guns. I like the constitution too. As far as I am concerned, you can keep your guns. Sleep with them under your pillow if you must. There may be some limits I'd put on magazine size and on where you can carry them (not Starbucks). There may be some things you do that result in having your gun rights terminated. Felony, mental illness. There might even be temporary limits such as removing firearms from a home where there is a domestic violence order. There might be research that allows us to better predict situations where gun violence of a regrettable nature occurs (thinking road rage here...I posted three references to road rage gun killings in the past month or two a week ago in this thread). Maybe we find out through research that some of the stand your ground laws are being abused and need to be changed. Lots of things that might help reduce gun deaths but only research, not flailing about with a copy of the Bill of Rights, will help us better understand how to do that. NRA should go back to it's roots and be a sportsman's association focused on gun safety and sporting use of firearms rather than trying to quash research into firearm injuries.

Firearm deaths are not only accidents. A large number of domestic homicides are committed with easily accessible firearms. The data from CDC on the risk of a wife/domestic partner being shot by her mate were rather striking. Of course he could have beaten her to death with a wet sponge (name whatever implement you like) but gunshots are more efficient and harder to survive.

Point is that firearms cause a lot of deaths in this country. Approximately as many as MVI. We study automobile accidents to make cars safer and to educate drivers (eg wear seatbelts). We should do no less to understand firearm deaths.

Agree. Nobody I know is against preventing accidents (although I gather some people argue against some safe storage rules). It is the acts of rage that is difficult to deal with. Easy accessibility of firearms makes acts of rage fatal rather than requiring a trip to the dentist. I don't know what the best way to limit such violence but not having a gun handy would certainly be one way. Hard to balance against legitimate self protection needs.

It depends on how the rules are written. There was a guy in Canada who woke up to some thugs trying to burn his house down with him inside (they were throwing Molotov cocktails at his house). He shot over their heads and called the cops. When the cops showed up (15 mins later?), he was arrested and charged with improper storage of a firearm, careless use of a firearm and pointing a firearm.

On the other hand, an easily accessible weapon for self defense on the part of the (physically) weaker person could make even the trip to the dentist unnecessary.
