Another Trailer Build?

What works for me is to find some round lights and then some pipe that's larger in diameter than the lights. Weld the pipe to the frame, weld a flat strip of metal across the front with the hols drilled in it to mount the lights, and then drill some holes in the side (if you worried about side marker lights) and bottom (if you're going to mount the plate below the taillight). They sell a nice 2 1/2" taillight for motorcycles that are pretty cheap. They have one mounting stud in the back so they are easy to mount inside the pipe. They are a little small so I would put two or even three per side.

I've always used 4" diameter lights but then now seam to all use the rubber gasket around the outside which makes it hard to recess them inside the pipe (but it could be done. I've never done it but you could weld a ring inside the pipe, slide the light into the pipe with the rubber gasket in, and then another ring of steel to sandwich it. That second ring could have expanded metal on it to protect the light.

I also like to weld stainless bolts to the frame for ground points. You'll never have ground issues.

So I'm kind of back on it. I told you I had a hair-brained idea. The dump cylinders retract into the body when closed then drop down to the axle and push the body up. This gives me 16 degrees of starting angle and tips the body up to 40 degrees. I put some wood in the cart and it starts to slide at 20 degrees.

Either it works or I tear it up and waste more money. Wife not too keen on me right about now as the bills are coming in. Holy krap steel is not cheap these days. The bending of the panels and steel this far is over $1,500 bucks.

I like it!

A friendly suggestion if I may?

Maybe add/weld a piece of angle or flat bar to the opposite side of the axle tube to counteract the push from the cylinders. $20 bucks now or much more $$ later for another axle...

I like it too! Better apply for a patent.

Have you measured how far back the axle moves with maximum spring compression?

You may have to add a plate to the edge of the angle iron, where the arrow is.

Hmmmmmmm

More to think about, that's why I am taking my time.

Thanks!

Interesting build.

A way to get by with a lower mounting angle for your main cylinders is to have a third, short, near vertical cylinder that only raises the bed a foot or so, then stops, to give the main cylinders a good starting angle when they take over.

Been awhile since I worked on this but back in February I was in Mexico on vacation and I woke up in the middle of the night (most likely still drunk) thinking about my hair-brained hoist idea; suddenly realized there was no way to hold the dump body from tipping over backwards while dumping over a bank or whatever. I thus ditched the retractable cylinder design in lieu of a subframe next to the axle that both cylinders mount to.

Still a lot to do but I loaded it with wood yesterday to test the dump function. Looks good but I can see my frame is a bit flimsy. It tips up to 45 degrees but I didn't want to dump the wood there so only went up halfway.

Back to the drawing board for fenders, lights, tailgate.

Interesting idea for the dump cyl mounting. Good catch about it tipping over backwards. What about attaching a retractable limiting strap from the front of the bed down to the frame and keep your idea? Double check the math on your dump force. Surplus Center has an online calculator for figuring out the force of an angled cyl.

The last 5 pages of the current 8 pages of my dump wagon build have been about sorting out the flawed geometry of my design and switching to a scissor lift (rebuild to happen soon....):
