Another Trailer Build?

If you can find a scrap or cheap lift gate they have a good 12v motor / pump / reservoir that is compact and might work well for you. Lots of scrapped out delivery trucks / trailers shouldn't be too hard to find one.

There are lots of configurations but this is typical, be sure to grab all the solenoids. Remote winch switch, cable and plugs would work well to run it. Would need it's own battery but you could wire it to charge from the 7 way trailer connector just like trailer brake batteries do.

I'd be more than happy to help you get the expected performance out of that Hypertherm Powermax600 plasma. You should have been able to do that whole job and many more on one set of torch consumables. It is normal to get thousands of cut cycles on one nozzle, and 2 to 3x that on the torch electrode....so something is definitely wrong! Jim Colt Hypertherm

"So I pretty much have the frame stripped, by the time I'm done paying for grinding wheels, torch gas and Hypermax 600 consumables I might have been better off starting from scratch. I have a love hate relationship with Hypertherm right about now, I've never been totally satisfied with the maintenance and performance of this unit. Might be time to trade for a better model. It eats consumables and I don't have a lot of experience using it; could be part of the problem".

Most 1 ton dump trucks nowadays use 12 volt electric/ hydraulic pumps with built in resevoirs to run the dump pistons. Try to find a junk truck and get the piston and pump off it. All you would have to do is run a heavy gauge positive/negative wire to the back of your truck and out a plug on it to run your electric pump.

Just getting caught back up with pre-Winter chores. Gonna get back on this. Hitting up the local trailer parts place today for springs and bearing stuff.

The local metal shop tells me they can bend the dump body from 1/8" in one sheet.

Thanks for the help with the Plasma cutter Jim. I've been toying with the idea of the new style torch, I don't use this that much but I just spent 3 days cutting a burned baffle out of my wood boiler with this machine and it was pretty ugly. I ended up using the old flame torch.

I'd like to learn what exactly wears out with the consumables? I see the hole in the tip gets large and there is a divot that burns into the tip. I'll take a few photos if you would be so kind to educate me. I have basic air dryers in my air line but nothing extraordinary. The local welding shop friend of mine says they are considering using nitrogen with their unit. I tried with this one but didn't see any difference.

Thanks, Fred

Already spent 30 bux in abrasives. Maybe shoulda just started over, 2 late now.

Time to order cylinders or a hoist, not sure which way to go but I would like to keep it as light as possible.

I wish I knew more about engineering the hoist part as I would rather do this once and not have to tear it up to re-figure my mistakes. Seems in searching other's adventures 15 degrees seems to be the angle at which the dump cylinders would need to be attached at to be able to start the load.

An online hydraulic calculator shows that a 2 inch cylinder will push a load 7800 lbs. at 2500 psi. Does this mean 2 cylinders will double the effort?

I am hoping to use two 36" long cylinders with a 2" bore one at each side under the dump body.

The tub should be fabbed this week at the local metal shop.

Fred, needing ideas and thanks.

You might want to PM J_J on these hydraulic issues.

(About all I really know about hydraulics is it needs fluid to run.... , so I won't venture an opinion).

With you on preferring to only cut/build once....
