I looked at the plastic cover on the driveshaft. It appeared to be positioned correctly but I guess I am not sure. There is a small dent/crack in the side of it. Can you elaborate on what I should check for specifically?

I shoot a little oil where the shaft goes into the plastic cover.

Ok.

It appeared to be positioned correctly ...
Really ?

Based on ... what, exactly ?

... but I guess I am not sure.
Ahhh ... there is hope then.

There is a small dent/crack in the side of it.
Ok ...

That don't ring any bells on this end (which don't mean much) ... may be something, may be nothing.

Can you elaborate on what I should check for specifically?
Read my original post again.

It says:

"If your driveshaft for the front axle has a plastic cover on it trying (sic) loosening it up (it's clamped) and rotating the cover. It's a known issue on B series. It (the squeal) will reappear periodically, as the cover rotates back out of position."

So no "lookee" ... ya actually have to do something (loosen the clamp, rotate the cover, and see if the noise goes away)

Savvy ?

If it were me, I'd try rotating it in both directions ... if the first stab at don't produce the desired outcome ;)

I shoot a little oil where the shaft goes into the plastic cover.
I tried that initially myself ... didn't solve the problem ...

In fact, I ended up wondering if it didn't cause the cover to rotate out of position faster ...

Does this thin plastic cover serve a purpose? Can it just be removed?

Mhart,
Sorry to hear about this, I thought I was the only one with this issue. I have had this going on for many years. In fact, I spent $1100 at my dealer trying to get this noise fixed, they took the front end apart, the noise went away for the initial road test but then came right back. This is still going on, B7800. I have had this since 2006. I thought this might be related to the hydraulic screen located at the side of the transmission, so lots pulled it out and cleaned it, noise is still there. I noticed that the drive shaft between the transmission and the hydrostatic drive is very sloppy, and there are no grease points at the yoke. I tried spraying chain lube oil into the slip yoke and the noise went away for a few weeks, then came back. Sprayed more chain oil and the sound went away again, for a while. My dealer told me that the floppy slip joint is normal, yet I've never seen anything like this before. Checked your shaft if you would and let us know. Mine has 998 hours now and has been growling like yours since it turned 200 hours. And it comes and goes exactly as you described, mine is just like yours.
So you are not alone sir...
Dan

Thanks Dan. Did yours make a similar sound as what I described. It is very odd. I fiddled around with that plastic cover today, unclamped it and rotated it around. I drove around the property for a while and never heard any sounds. One other factor I though of was today it was over 50 degrees. It seems that when I first heard this sound was last winter when I was moving snow. It did not happen at all this summer or fall, but reappeared again just last week when it got cold again. Probably just a fluke/coincidence.

Mhart, yes that is correct, mine is making the exact same sound, drives me crazy. It use to be during the winter only but over the last few years, the sound comes on every time when I attempt travel speeds over 1500 rpm. the sound stops only once I take my foot off of the hydrostatic pedal and the tractor slows down. At first I thought the sound was due to oil starvation at the hydrostatic pump, sounded like an extreme cases of pump cavitation. The sound would quit once pump demand was reduced, when the tractor was slowed down enough or fully stopped, but now, I'm not so sure that it is pump related at all. PLUS I've done several hydraulic oil and filter filter changes, including suction screen cleaning, cut the filters apart and they never show metal fragments or contamination. I. think this is somehow caused by shaft rotation.
I was going to take the front driveshaft off at some point and test drive the tractor at 2100 rpm. Haven't done that yet. Let's hope some one else on this TBN post can help figure this out.

Someone has (me) ... it's the shaft cover.
