This. I can't imagine letting things like tax rates dictate where I live. So many other factors are more important, to me at least.

It used to be that high taxes meant a better place to live. That's not the case any longer usually. I pay high taxes and for what I pay, I'm being ripped off big time for the quality of living around here.

I remember when the govenor of Virginia got rid of the car tax, somehow it came back and higher than ever.

8.75 % in New York unless the vehicle "is predominantly used in farming". You betcha my new pickup is a farm vehicle.

Back in the 90's, NC had a road "trust fund" that was filled with our high fuel taxes. The trust fund was taken by the legislature to spend on other projects and our roads have been crap ever since. When I had moved to NC, I was surprised at the quality of the roads, even in the rural areas, compared to Florida.

The $%^&*() legislature allowed a toll road into NC a few years ago. For sure they want it to be the first of many. What is criminal about what they did was that the toll road is only on the south side of Raleigh. The same road north is NOT tolled. The legislatures allowed a company to build the south extension and collect tolls for decades. Of course the people south of town don't like having to pay tolls, especially since the people to the north don't have to pay tolls. I think the legislature was hoping that the people on the south side would complain enough to allow a toll on the north road. Thankfully, that did not happen.

The legislature has been talking for the last few years, hopefully this will stop now that the old party was thrown out, to put up tolls on I95.

FLA used to, and I would think still does, tax vehicles brought into the state by new residents. FLA DOES have a boat USE tax of 6% of the value of the boat for ANY boat that spends 90 consecutive days in the state or 183 days in the state. You will pay up to $18,000 in taxes if you take your boat to FLA for the winter and the boat costs $300K or more. Thankfully the tax amount is capped. Many people, more than you think, live on their boat full time instead of living in a house and the tax hits them hard if they visit FLA for any length of time.

OK. Bought myself a new truck for the first time since moving to Virginia two years ago. Previously, in South Carolina it was a $300.00 set fee, no problem. BUT, here in Va it is 4% of sale price. Short story, came to $2,400.00. I almost fell off the chair. Dealer apologized profusely, but what could he do? This is above and beyond the title, registration fees, and the personal property tax I have to pay every year on the truck as long as I own it. My question is, who gets that money, and what do I get out of it ? I'm pretty sure I just took one in the shorts. What a rip off...

But, it's all for "the children"! How could anyone possibly be against this?

Ours is 5.5%. S. Carolina is still 5% with a $300 maximum. You could do better and worse than 4%.

Wow, I wish our car taxes were as low as that old calculator. If I bought a new car in my county today,
I will pay over 9% sales taxes, and another 1% property tax. So a $35K vehicle will result in $3100 sales
tax and another $400 property tax. The latter goes down a bit every year, so after 10y you may be
under $200/year to renew your registration.

Some other counties are higher.

It STILL means a better place to live............ONLY DIFFERENCE, it's for the 6 million Illegals who now have a better place to live. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH,

Drive through any Virginia state college and you will see huge waste, mult-million football fields along with many other sporting arena's. Drive by campus doorms in dead of winter and look at all the windows wide open. Also takes a lot of taxes to pay tenured professors to teach two classes a week. My sons experence is many professors put a video tape in the machine and don't even teach classes. Local JMU just put restrictons on travel to obola areas... heck why do professors and other staff need to travel to Africa?

In Massachusetts 16% of the state sales tax revenue goes to help pay for the MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) which provides service to the greater Boston area. Out of 60 years I've only ridden on an MBTA train once, but it just makes me smile to know I'm subsidizing the greater population of Boston with cheap fares to ride around with very little benefit to the rest of the state. :thumbdown:
