Must remove the hitch?

My post used the example from your post above it. You mentioned seeing a rusty draw at in a HD parking lit as a basis for advocating hitch removal at all times when it WA out of the owners yard or actually had a trailer on it. Seems 1 or 2 rusty hitches is a statistically small sample rate to base something on.

Some of us hitch and unhitch a trailer daily, or multiple times a day. Having to slide that draw at out and up into the tool box and back again every couples hours seems WA more excessive than simply expecting someone to not walk into a part of my truck!

If a person is never looking down then they are gonna be just as apt to trip on a rock, pothole, wad of trash or dog poo or a parking lot bumper, or a curb. Not paying attention is not paying attention, that's a personal responsibility issue. I know that's a foreign term or concept for many people these days, unfortunately.

Ps I think I get it fine. Sounds like you want others to remove hitches because you walk close to other peoples vehicles and don't watch where you are going ? :)

If people are too stupid to look where they are walking, then putting a red cover on it isn't going to protect them either. I am so tired of big government writing stupid laws to protect stupid people from doing stupid things. One time of cracking the shin on a trailer hitch should be enough for a lifetime of "don't walk too close to a truck bumper" experience.
I agree. You can't document stupidity.

Removing my hitch?

I don't live in the rust belt, so I'm not concerned about seizing.
I don't live in a high crime area nor do I spend hours in town shopping, so I'm not concern about theft.
I'm not concerned about protecting by truck nor am I concerned about causing additional damage to anyone who hits me.
In my part of the world, running into hitches is not a big problem. Makes me wonder.
If it does happen, then a person around here realizes it's their fault not yours.
If I remove a hitch, it's usually just long enough to put in another one.
On the rare occasion you catch one of my trucks without a hitch in the receiver, it's for some other reason.

Why might you ask? Because with all the other things that have my attention on a daily bases (rain .. too much/not enough, commodity prices, break downs, input cost and just simply trying to get everything done, I can assure you that removing my hitch doesn't come close to making the top 500 on my daily to do list.

Thy name is hypocrite.

LOL, I prefer the term complicated.

Lighten up a bit. I didn't attack your beliefs, nor do I have any interest in debating your beliefs vs my own regarding gun rights or political leaning. It was, admittedly, a relatively poor attempt at humor in response to a very humorous picture.

The real solution is a breakaway hitch that snaps off when somebody's leg runs into it.

Rubber would be better. That way shins would bounce off. 😁

On second thought, that might cause knee damage from the bounce. So, paying attention to your surroundings wins again...

Need a hitch ball cover that looks like a tarantula or rattlesnake, not a bass.

I think the government should require air bags on hitches to protect those who are not capable of watching where they walk.

Stumbled back on this thread today and can't believe it's still going. Worse, TBNrs are actually getting angry at each other over something that never came close to being a law. Worse still, I'm out of popcorn.

Who is going to tell this guy to remove his hitch whenever he gets back on the road? :)

But his is already safety yellow. Which makes it ok. He tried to warn you.

Just a quick update. This thread actually made me think about the hitch on our minivan. We hardly ever tow anything, but both my wife and I bump our shins most every visit to Costco loading groceries. But for sheer convenience I left it in.

Well, I decided for safety to take it off. But when I do need it I am mostly renting a trailer, so if I put it in the garage where I'll never find it again, it won't be available when I do need it. So it needs to be stored inside the minivan.

Ever thought about having a 20 lb piece of metal flying around inside a car in an accident?

I think I may end up taking my chances with shin bumping. Having that hitch fly at my head is a much scarier thought.

It may fit where the jack and lug wrench go (worked on my wife's 2002 Caravan and works on her current vehicle too).

I still leave mine in the garage, but I do know where to find them. No way I'd leave one in the receiver when not towing, but a lot of people do.

Mine is stored in one of the side mounted tool boxes with a lot of other tools etc. The same one is used when moving the trailer with the tractor before hooking up to the truck.

Keep hearing "watch where you're walking"...Personally I don't spend my life walking around looking at my feet..Everyone I know that leaves the drawbar in has admitted that they are too lazy to remove them...I don't ask what else they are too lazy to do when hooking the trailer up because I'd rather not know.

Personally, I have 4 different drawbars for different trailers that I own. When I'm done towing, even for a few hours, the drawbars are removed and stored. I see no reason to leave them installed..Never have, never will.

Slam me all you want.

Not slamming you, but I don't think you need to look at your feet constantly while walking. I'm sure you would notice a huge puddle of oil under the back of a truck or a snow pile that would make the route impassable... all without looking at your feet.

I could care less if people take them out or leave them in. If I slam my shin into one, I say "dumbass" to myself and keep on going about my day. If someone wants to be courteous and take theirs out for my benefit, that is a kind gesture and I appreciate it, but I certainly don't expect it.
