Yes of course my opinions and arguments are personal. I think yours are too and that's OK. We both see the same facts and come to different opinions.
It's possible you personally know more people that stopped a crime with their gun. I don't personally know of any. If I could become a hero by shooting a bad guy at just the right time; I'd be happy to pull the trigger. However I'm choosing to give up this fantasy to protect my family from a gun accident.

Again, please use the facts. Look up FBI stats regarding firearm use by civilians. I agree regarding accidents. If you are not 100% proficient with a firearm, you should not be touching them. That also applies to cars, tractors, chainsaws and on and on. Accidents are accidents, just that. As long as you have humans doing things they shouldn't, accidents will always happen.

Time to prune this thread of any "why carry a gun" posts and stick with the topic...

The article doesn't state the type of firearm or type of holster.

Some (most, in my experience) cover the trigger guard partially or fully. Some use the design of the holster for retention, some use a strap (my preference).
Without more info about the type of firearm and type of holster, we're all speculating.

So, I'll speculate: The firearm probably did not have an external safety and the holster probably did not fully cover the trigger and guard. Has the person (who had the negligent discharge) was sliding across the seat, the trigger caught on something and the firearm discharged.
Obviously, my speculation could be close to the truth or way off base...

The important aspect is, if one is going to carry a firearm, get a proper fit holster with good retention (as I wrote, I prefer straps), and never carry a firearm that has had trigger work to lighten the pull.
Unlike Happy Gilmore, if I'm carrying a semi-auto (Glock, most likely), I always have a round chambered. Glocks have a pretty stout trigger pull out of the box although, invariably, some folks just can't keep their fingers off the trigger which can negate any safety features.

Of course not, because there aren't many options in that situation. I do choose to avoid things like skydiving because of the danger.
It's just that considering all the factors of gun carrying, I feel I'm safer overall without one. Even in a crime situation, pulling out a gun doesn't guarantee success. If fact, it could make things much worse.
What I'm saying is I believe for every one successful CCW event, there are more than one bad ones. I know you disagree, but it's hard to get exact figures on this.

That is the beauty of this country. I have the right and you choose not to carry a firearm. The wonders of freedom. By the way, skydiving is statistically quite safe.

Here is an example of not using stats. My brother in law got into a bad car wreck. If he had his seatbelt on he would of died(told by rescue) To this day he will not wear his seatbelt. Does that make sense? Absolutely not. Stats disprove his decision not to wear the seat belt.

For years I've been offering $100 for an accident report that proves this. And it is always a friend or relative with no details. So I call BS.

Here are the details. Top of car crushed to the seat where passenger sits with seat belt keeping him there. He ended up on the floor under the dashboard kind of in a protected cocoon. You figure it out.

You are right. You should not carry a firearm with one in the chamber if you are uncomfortable. Matter of fact, you should not be carrying a firearm period if you are uncomfortable with one in the chamber. All this means is that you require more training.

I carry a pocket semi-auto pocket pistol. There isn't a safety lever on the little bugger. In a hasty effort to pull it out of my pocket, I run the risk of it discharging with one in the tube. I'll take the extra 1.2 seconds to jack one in the chamber vs one in the leg ( or other regions of my autonomy) any day. And I'm comfortable with that. No training needed.
