For quickly checking email and reading TBN while laying in bed, I like the iPad mini. For reading books, I prefer my Kindle Paperwhite. The wife prefers the KindleFire 7" HD for reading her books. We use the Kindle Fire HD 8.9" to watch Netflix when not in front of the TV. For everything else I use the Surface Pro 3 which is hooked up to a 27" monitor unless I need to do some actual work in bed, then it becomes portable. Overall, nothing touches the Surface Pro 3, but then, it ain't cheap.
In all, we have eight tablets between the two of us, plus three desktops and three laptops. Each has its advantages, depending on what it is you need to do. Oddly enough, we refuse to buy iPhones and pay ridiculous data fees, plus we don't want to turn into those people who don't know how to act in public without an iPhone in their hands. God forbid they should look up and smile at a stranger.
