No Brandi it was an older, smaller Bobcat. He might have been pulling more weight than me, but it would have been very little and I doubt it. The buggies I was hauling weigh 4600-4700 lbs a piece. And I'm not picking on the Duramax. I would have told the story regardless of the outcome. It was just the one and only time since owning my Diesel I've been involved in what I would consider a "real world" challenge. All three of us drivers enjoyed the test.

Back to the thread for a moment, lol, what would be the weight difference of the trailer from BP to GN on a twenty foot 10,000lb trailer, roughly.

the reason I ask is this I just checked the MTO (ministry transport Ontario) license designations for trailering non recreational vehicles. There is a 10,000lb limit even for D license for max towed vehicle. The D license allows for a larger tow vehicle, lol, no difference to the vehicle being towed. The thing is if you can prove the trailer and load is under the 10,000lb limit you are ok even if the trailer is rated for 14,000lbs. The problem though is the trailer itself will be heavier thereby reducing the payload. If the trailer is 1,000lbs heavier the total payload would drop by that weight.

I'd say, in general with similar size and type trailers, a GN will be ~10% heavier. So maybe 500#

Trouble is, most dont normally compare apples to apples.

GN are typically londer. Hard to find only a 20' GN (which would be a 15+5). Also not common in anything under 14k either.

Deckover and low profile also make a difference.

Just a quick comparison of 102" wide 20+5 trailers from big tex. Both 30k GVWR

A GN has 15k axles and w12x22 beams. weight 6980
A BP has 12k axles, same beams weighs 6100#

Well just using big tex as an example (i like their site)

You can get a 10k BP trailer 83" wide x 20' long and 2520#

Their lightest GN is 12k pipe top low-profile type. same 83"x20 is 3160#. So you would loose about 600# capacity.

Step up to the deckover style GN, and their smallest and lightest is a 20+5 14k, and it is just shy of 5000#

Thanks, my truck wont notice the 10k trailer either way, F350 dually, I like the fiver/goose neck stability but unless I upgrade my license to an AR which requires a yearly medical (was $100 ten years ago)I would be hard pressed to legally move my tractor and some toys with a gooseneck. I want the 20', it looks like a bumper pull for me. To bad the ministry can't be talk to when you are pulled over, lol.

As I said earlier, these trailer weight issues need to be considered. Especially if you are gonna bump up against your legal limits. When you do that switch from BP to GN it's not 100% net gain, gotta figure in trailer weight differences as well.

Just got a quote on a 10K BP trailer with a weight of 3000lbs only leaves 7k for payload with the Ontario limit on G and D license yet I can hook up my 16,000 pound 40' fiver RV no problem, go figure.

Trailer pulling story. I was pulling my 6800# GN trailer with 2 Jeep Buggies onboard with my '00 7.3 Powerstroke. Friend of mine was pulling same size trailer with a Jeep Buggy and a Polaris RZR onboard with his '06 6.0L Powerstroke. On an accessable 4 lane hiway. A GM Duramax truck pulled onto the roadway ahead of us pulling same size trailer with a Bobcat CTL onboard. My friend was ahead of me. We caught the Duramax before he could get up to speed and started passing him. My friend got ahead of him and pulled back into the right lane. I was coming behind still in the passing lane. I noticed the Duramax was in the throttle and smoking. Ahhhhhh,,,, the race is on. The Duramax pulled into the passing lane ahead of me so I had to match his speed. We slowly crawled past the 6.0L. After he got past my friend the Duramax pulled to the right lane. Him and I raced for about 20 miles. Took me that long to get past him. I looked at my speedo as I crawled past him and I was going 87-88 mph. As I passed he gave me the thumbs up and courteously flashed his lights when I was clear to move to the right. My friend in his 6.0L was at least 1/2 mile behind by this time. The two Powerstrokes were stock. Pretty sure the Duramax was too. Hope so anyway or he would be very disappointed. :)

I remember commercials on TV where a Chevy was pulling a Dodge up a rocky mountain and had a Ford truck strapped to the top of his bed. Or was it the other way around? :D
