Spelling, punctuation, and grammar are important to me. I often make mistakes here and try to minimize them by using spell checking, which is automatic red underlining of text as I write. I post then re-read to see if there are any further errors.
Sometimes I don't do well with paragraph formatting, but I do try to break up what otherwise might be hard on some people's concentration level.
It's a tractor forum doesn't cut it for me. Is that an excuse for settling for the crappiest, lowest level of communication?
I can't, (read don't want to) learn anything at my age, is also a bogus excuse for settling. Own lingo?!
Hello America, speak English. It's our heritage, and unless everyone is willing to learn and speak Spanish, it is all our responsibility to keep English our first language.

I try to at least spell correctly and use the correct punctuation thanks to spell checker. The problem that I seem to have is I get in a hurry and think faster then I type and for get a word sometimes. The other thing that happens is that I use the wrong word, correct spelling but wrong word.

I like using a spell checker because I often misspell words mainly due to having fat fingers and occasionally I simply forget how to spell the word. I'm certain I make lots of grammatical errors too but I strive to make myself clearly understood and to that end I will often edit myself. I believe it would be inconsiderate to do otherwise.

Blame occasional mistakes on your keyboard. We no longer have to worry about the jamming of linkages.
The QWERTY design is based on a layout created for the Sholes and Glidden typewriter and sold to Remington in 1873. It became popular with the success of the Remington No. 2 of 1878, and remains in use on electronic keyboards due to the network effect of a standard layout and a belief that alternatives fail to provide very significant advantages.[1]
The only thing it has going for it is that most typing is done with the left hand.Dvorak Simplified Keyboard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I am German, and English is not my language. I excused myself allready in my intruduction. I make a lot of mistakes when I am typing. When I type German, my conputer corrects me, and this is good so, because most Germans are very fussy about spelling. Maybe I could change it to english, but than it would not work for German any more. So you have to live with my mistakes. I saw in an other forum from somebody: If you find spelling mistekes, you may keep then!
Alex

That would make a great signature line!

"If you find spelling or punctuation mistakes, you may keep them."

I am considered bilingual, that is french/english bilingual.
Spoken, no problem, but written is where my shortcomings show up.
Many words simply flip a few letters and others simply have a different ending.

It really irks me when a self appointed languish policeman corrects a minor goof.
Such folks seem really **** retentive IMHO.

My 2 cents.

Good Point, Piloon. We TBNers must remember that not everyone in the world has (American) English as their first language, and we also need to remind ourselves that some people face very real writing challenges (due to learning or physical disabilities, educational disadvantages, or whatever) but are nonetheless trying their best.

As I see it, the value of this thread is to encourage sloppy or lazy posters to at least read over their posts before hitting "send", and I also do sympathize with those who use voice recognition software, e.g., in their Cel phones. (I myself have an iphone, and sometimes I think that there is an electronic idiot living inside of it who can't understand plain english when I speak to it - very frustrating to have to make all those corrections after, using that little bitty iphone keyboard!)

What we don't want to do is discourage our fellow TBNers from posting for fear of being bullied about writing shortcomings when they really are trying. After all, this is a "fun and sharing" website, not a work or school situation where we are required to perform at a level of excellence in order to be considered part of the club.

Very well said, I agree with that 100%
I am a French Canadian myself and also 95% bilingual !
I do my best to make myself clear and reduce the spelling errors to a minimum.

And that's an attitude we see so often - if you have not learned it in X years, your not going to learn it now. That's really too bad you can't or don't want to learn new things. Technology advances and leaves people behind.

And "your own lingo"? Is that taught in school? I face that a lot. SWMBO (she who must be obeyed, my wife) is from Jackson, Mississippi. There are some words she uses infrequently and she mispronounces them such that it leads me to wonder what she said. Thankfully it is now easy to call up an online pronunciation guide to let her hear the generally acceptable pronunciation. But I'm glad she is still young enough (she's only 67) to learn.

On some of the forums I visit the average poster seems to type all posts on a cell phone with one hand while driving, other forums are "professional" seems like all posts were written by English language professors.

Well, It's not too bad for me.. Being an HVAC/ Plumbing contractor, I have to learn new things all the time..Just because 1 don't want to learn the things you deem important means nothing to me..If you are looking for this perfection you seek, Perhaps you should visit these ''professional Forums" often ,and learn as much punctuation as possible.. To me , it's just not important.. ''she who must be obeyed " Really ?? enough said !
