How important is spelling and punctuation to you?

Some questions for those of you with kids still in K-12.

How much class time is devoted to spelling, grammar, composition, etc.?
How about homework in those areas?
Do kids still learn how to diagram sentences?

My gripe is the run-on paragraphs--1000+ words in a single paragraph--that show up so frequently on TBN. These eye tests I just ignore even if it's on an interesting topic. Not going to waste time on reading someone who can't organize his or her thoughts into short paragraphs. Have a little regard for your readers.

Affect is most often used as a verb, while effect is most often used as a noun - it is rare that they can be truly interchanged. Full disclosure - I often need to remind myself of the differences...

I use "A verb" as a reminder...(not trying to be argumentative) but for not being interchangeable (rarely)...technically it may be true but actually either can be used as a noun or a verb...and it gets worse considering them in the past tense ...ed...

Technology has replaced the need for some fundamentals...

Today's students write their essays and term papers on word processors that have grammar, punctuation and spelling checks/prompts...

How many engineers that graduated in the last 25-30 years can efficiently use a slide rule?

The US military now trains more RC drone pilots than actual pilots...

Technology has replaced the need for knowing the theory/reason behind some things that were once considered a basic requirement...

The first two, in my experience, are pretty well covered here.

I haven't seen sentence diagramming since I was a student.

Are we doing wrong when we attempt to get posters to spell and use punctuation?

No one likes to be corrected in public.

However, if they're being a pretentious jerk know-it all, and they happen to miss some punctuation or spelling, it's so much fun to point it out.

It IS a tractor forum of course. But standard attention to grammar and punctuation are something we should all try and subscribe to. Otherwise, IMHO, it is a significant and clear marker for the dumbing down of America. I think it goes along with pants on the ground, poor grooming, and so on. There is something in some generations called pride, and frankly I see little of it nowadays.

Test to see if I can change the Title

Advice and advise are misused most of the time on this site/sight.

From reading some posts, I think some people do not know how to correct a typo.

I remember one post that had a misspelled word in the Title. The first sentence in the post was apologizing for typo and stating the correct word, instead of correcting typo.

Also, it is usually obvious when someone is using a dumb Smart Phone.

When I post I try to remember the old saying "It's better to be quiet and thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt" but every now and then my keyboard mis quotes me.
