Just got an e-mail from a friend asking me for advice on this new Dump trailer she found on Craigslist...

It would be used for dump runs and to haul anything horse related... hay, shaving etc.

Never shopped for a new dump trailer so I putting it out there for comment and will forward them.

Brakes on both axles?
What tires?
Looks the price is a little on the high side for what's sold in Mississippi, low side for what's sold in DC

Why do you need to pay a tire recycling fee on a new trailer?

Why do you need to pay a tire recycling fee on a new trailer?

In California the charge applies even to a new Kubota tractor... on the L3800 the California recycle fee is 4 x $1.75 totaling $7.00

When you go to Home Depot and buy lumber there is a special State Lumber Tax... better stop before I get off topic.

Good questions...

Just noticed the tax does not reflect the AG rate of 3%... vs. 10%... might be a few bucks less.

My big question is just how robust of a trailer is this when the ad starts out by saying light duty?

$900 in fees and taxes for a $4100 dollar item. How the heck do you folks in California afford to live there?

I don't know a lot about (non-boat) trailers, but the height of the sides (2ft?) strikes me as too low.

E.g., what if you have a load of bucked firewood rounds in there, and hit a bump while slowing down? Or accelerating?

I'd like to see a deeper box, even if all the other stuff checks out. JMO.

It does have stake pockets... but you are right... too shallow unless dirt?

In a different thread I posted about a 96 F150 that was parked the last two years in the owner's garage and not driven... the owner had a stroke and no longer able to drive...

It was over $1200 in back reg fees, weight fees, penalties, other fees and current 2015 reg fee just so the 19 year old truck could be legal to drive...

Looks very light duty to me, but at that price it may get you by.

Odd (to me)... two 2,350 lb axles, yet 7,000 GVW? How's that work?

When I bring up the ad it says 2 - 3500 lb axles.
It has low sides because it only has a 4800 lb load capacity. If the sides were higher owners would tend to fill it up which would make it over capacity. I think it would work for your friends light duty uses.

Seems like a very single purpose trailer. A tandem of sand\soil\gravel etc... is only $200~300 delivered and most of that is the cost of the product.

:ashamed: That's embarrassing. You are absolutely correct. My apologies, and that sure does make lots more sense now.
It says "2, 3500lb axles" and my mind just saw the comma and filled in the rest. Sigh.

No need to apologize. Sometimes the mind reads what it wants and not what it sees.
Sometimes I get in a hurry to reply and put my foot in my mouth.

Did you even read the OP's post?

It's a trailer for someone to haul "stuff", no mention of
sand\soil\gravel etc.

OP - did you find out about brakes yet?

/edit - I've found many ads mentioning brakes, but then they only have them on one axle.

Price in the ad includes brakes on one axle... the person did not know the cost for adding second axle brakes and was going to check...

Yup. It's too small for large loose items. Too small for hay or shavings. Impractical for loads of soil, sand etc..

If it were me I would look at the 10,000 lb trailers , they are a bit more money , but they are a lot more trailer . I had a 7000 lb and regreted not getting a bigger capacity after 6 months
