Probably doesn't seem like right now ....but....your lucky. You have been given a gift, and a great one at that.

That's what Maggie's time with you was.

Some people never have this gift, and some are incapable of receiving such.

I know the grief of which you speak and from my experience there is no cure for that bereavement. There is a treatment. Time and the company of the dogs you have left.
That's how I have dealt with it in the past and soon I will have to go through it again.

Knowing the pain you have and what I have to get ready for again......; What I fear the most is when the last one leaves and I have none left to care for.
So count your blessings, use your faith, as this pain will pass and you will be left with only the great memories.

As I have searched for peace with the decision I made with Maggie, trying to forgive myself for taking such a precious life, my only solace can come from knowing she is part of God's redemption of His Creation. Without that redemption, Maggie, and all other of our beloved animal companions are simply lost to dust. I cannot accept that outcome and thereby be forced to live with unending remorse. God is good. God loves His entire Creation - including His animals.

I found this site today that deals with this issue far better than I. For those of you who struggle with the loss of your beloved pets and the pain of the possibility you will not see them again - I hope you will take a few minutes to follow the link below and read the arguments for the eternity of your loving and loyal friends.

My faith is in a loving and just God. A God who blesses me and gives me strength to deal with the hardships of this life. A God who has sacrificed Himself as the Christ to redeem me. A God of Heaven; a place of joy wherein ALL is reconciled to Him and no sorrow will abide. A God that knows how much we loved those of His Creation which have been trusted to our care and our hearts. A God that will love and care for my beautiful Maggie until we can be with her.

My sincere condolences. I have lost 2 precious Goldens and have been without a dog for 11 years now.

It takes a while to get over them. I equate the amount of grief is proportional to the amount of love.

Maggie was a beautiful dog. Thanks for sharing her picture.

Hi Kioti,

I'm so sorry for your loss. I had a dog for 17 years who was like my first child. We had to make the decision when he was so ill that he could no longer hardly stand and he was in renal failure too. I carried him on a pillow into the vet's office and I was crying like a baby. Had to hold him while they gave him the shot. I hated having to do that and felt like I had betrayed him but it was truly the best thing we could have done for him. He was so sick and would never get better.

You gave Maggie a wonderful life and did the right thing when she needed you most. She knew that. Loving them is doing what is best for them even if its the worst for us.

You did the only compassionate thing you could do and you can be proud of the many years where you gave her a great life. You, of all people, honor and know the value of an animal's life that has dedicated their own life to a human as a pet. Be proud that you did the best that you could do.

It's been a hard day. I had to let one of my beloved pets, Maggie, a Golden Retriever, go today.

She was only 8 years old, full of love and full of life. Sadly, she developed a tumor in her sinus that was making it almost impossible to breath. I would have done anything to save her but doctors gave us no chance whatsoever of effective treatment. Surgery was not possible due to proximity of the brain. Chemo and radiation were ruled out by 3 specialists and 5 pathologists. There was nothing but trying to give her quality of life these last few months.

I've had dogs my entire life, so losing them is not something new to me. This time, i am struggling to find peace. She was a precious creation of God and a huge part of our family. I held her as she passed from this life and my wife and I buried her this afternoon in one of our beautiful pastures. I've shed more tears these last few days than I would have imagined possible.

Maybe I'm just a silly old man, but I loved her dearly. My faith tells me that, in the end, God makes all things work for the good. We live, however, in a fallen world, so pain and suffering will be our lot until Christ returns. Still, these wonderful members of our families, our pets, are not responsible for that fall. They are examples of God's love - always loving, always forgiving. I pray He opened the gates of His Kingdom this afternoon and welcomed a very special girl into her new home.

I hate it when a family dog dies. every one we have had has!

There have been a few "special ones" that you just want to keep .

But reality. Dogs live about ten years (that's why they don't need constant dental care.

We live about 65 years (we need dental care ;_)

Dieing is part of life. move on. It has Nothing (and everything) to do with god's plan.

A righteous man regards the life of his animal ... Proverbs 12:10

I understand what you are saying but I feel you assign too little significance to God's Creation and His plan for redemption of that Creation. Animals were not an afterthought of God. It is my belief they deserve a little more than "Ho Hum, get another one" when they pass. We are commanded to be Good Stewards of God's Creation and I contend an absence of appreciation or respect is less than our charge.

KiotiKowboy,

Its a tough thing to deal with, hang in there. Nothing out there quite like a good dog with a caring person. Cherish the memories and know you made a good choice. Let the guilt go when you can.

We lost a young dog a year ago (hit by car). First feeling was we never want to go through that again but within about a month we gave a caring home to an abandoned dog. She's sleeping in here bed this morning and helps us to move on.

May you find peace in the coming days.
