That's good you're back at it and nice to have someone like your brother to lend the expertise. What's your brothers thoughts on the gear? When I zoom in on it I don't think it looks too bad but it's hard to tell from a picture.

Barring further incident it will last thousands of hrs. If the same happens every 500 hrs then maybe a thousand hrs more..

I had a bearing go on my dozer while I was deep in the woods. I had no way of getting it out of the woods other than very slowly and carefully driving it. The bull gear looked in worse shape than that and has lasted at least 6 years now without issue. I wouldn't worry about it but I would drain out the fluid. If you can find a place to put a magnet to catch the filings.

I hope you guys are right. I have not been able to use it yet because of all the rain we've been getting. We did drain the fluid and cleaned everything out. You can see in one of the pics pouring diesel in the gear to clean it. It was dirty.

Wish I had seen your thread before we went back with mine. But, I think we got it all cleaned up and in good shape. I hope so because it's finally dry and the tractor goes back to work tomorrow and I'll be putting lots of hours on it for the next 3 weeks.

I went with the UDT2 oil.

Well.....whaddaya know....The other side failed today. Crap!!!

Luckily, I was just finishing up a job and I felt the grinding, and got out and saw oil pouring out. Loaded it on my trailer and got it back to my shop. I'll probably order the parts 'next day air' delivery from Messicks and see if I can get someone to put it back together for me by Tuesday night.

I have one more field that needs to be graded and I was planning to be on it Wednesday morning.

That's awful!!! This makes me apprehensive on purchasing a new / used 5740 with 1000 hours... Also see one with 1600 hrs.....

My 3540 has 420 hrs...

I wonder if the original owner was one of the tractor owners that thinks the 50 hr service is not important and refused to change all the fluid out. I've changed all my new tractors at 50 hrs. On every one the front axle fluid was very nasty and the catch pan would sparkle like metal flake paint.
