Still not the one I was thinking of, but slacking lime using oyster shells.

65F now, sunny later, with a high of 96F. Winds SW at 5 to 10 mph.

Hey, I'm just happy the boat isn't named FULL MOON... ;)

Isn't there a superstition that it's bad luck not to re-christen a boat when it changes hands?

Maybe your TBN buddies could help you come up with a different name? How 'bout Wandering Turtle?

Ah, the joys of living in a historic building, eh Eric? Now we know where you developed the skills that let you handle the pond inspector so well. ;) But I wonder, if you hadn't come along to rescue the old barn, would the powers that be have been just as happy to see it tumble down on its own?

Happy birthday, Ron! May you have many more. :drink:

Consumer Reports has a big article on bug repellants in the July issue. They warn against using DEET at concentrations over 30%, and instead recommend Sawyer Fisherman's Formula with 20% Picaridin, a synthetic copy of a black pepper extract. CR also had good results with Repel Lemon Eucalyptus, another plant based formula with a 30% concentration. But they warn that both will take off nail polish (a big concern in this circle ;) and might stain leather or vinyl. We usually don't have a mosquito problem out here once things dry out, but this year I'm still gettin' chewed on. And the health service has reported several cases of West Nile virus locally:shocked:, so they're no longer something you can just ignore.

Farmer, when you lose a cow to lightning, does that prevent it from being butchered for the meat? Or aren't they the right kind of cow (said the city boy ;) Regardless, sorry for your loss, but glad the chickens were OK. Which prompts the obvious question: Do you end up eating a lot of chicken? I'm in the same boat when it comes to 3D, as one eye is much stronger than the other and I tend not to see out of the weak one. So far I don't feel like I've missed much. As far as San Andreas goes, this area seems to be much more geologically stable than most other areas of the state. At least the California Earthquake Authority thinks so, as the yearly premium for their earthquake insurance went from $850 in the SF Bay Area to $225 here around Chico. This house is built on bedrock to the latest codes, so I no longer carry that insurance. But there were a series of small tremors when they first filled Lake Oroville, the second largest reservoir in the state. But not when they put the water in, but the first time or two when they drained it back out over the dry summer. It seems that the water compressed the underlying bedrock, which then rebounded when the weight was removed. I have one neighbor that insists the activity ruined his well, but he seems to have other issues no one else does. :confused3:

Got the new pump hooked up to the sprayer yesterday. Much to my surprise and delight, the holes in the mounting plate matched the threaded bosses in the tank perfectly, and I had the job done before breakfast. Ran through three or four tanks before it got too hot, well dry actually, to keep going. CalFire warns against using power equipment in the dry grass after noon, so who am I to argue? Besides, by then it was lunch time and after that a siesta seemed in order.

TGIF folks!!!

65°F and .2 inches rain since midnight. But that's back home in Hawaii, forecast for mid 90'S and dry here in Prescott, AZ.

Make a quick stop at a TSC yesterday.

Be safe
Have a great day

75F and mostly cloudy @ 12:30 ...

Dodged the bullet yesterday ... big storm front came thru last evening with high winds and and a deluge of rain.

Doppler radar indicated a pair of tornados at the same time ... one within about 10 miles to the west of us and another maybe within 10 miles to the east of us. Nothing blew down here around the house, others didn't far quite as well:

I think I can hear the grass growing ... :(

Heading out to pick up the parts for the Simplicity here in a bit ... cost for the parts and machining turned out to be more than what I hoping for, but way under what it would have cost for even just the two (of the four) that were still available from Simplicity.

Nice logs will come in handy this winter
Yup ... regardless of whether the gas furnace in house is fixed or not, I still have the shop to heat ;)

   / Good morning!!!! #35,138
But if you remember RS's saga a furnace would be easier.
Probably ... got a line from my neighbor on a source for new furnaces ... cheap. Said he replaced his, either this last season or the season before, and paid around $500 for a 100K btu Armstrong unit, sourcing it from a local guy (another neighbor really) Think he did the install himself.

Probably not a top of the line unit, but given the T and E involved with burning wood, would probably pay to go that route.

RS, I need your help splitting some huge maples I had taken down. I think I got you beat on one trunk size.
Noodle 'em into quarters (or more) and you'll be good. It's easier on the saw than a cross-cut ... just be sure to clear the saw occasionally so the sprocket cover doesn't get packed up with shavings ;):

I'll go measure this AM so I can have some bragging rights!

You may be onto something. Last fall, a friend was cleaning out his garage and gave me one of those canvas tarps. Even delivered it, and wrapped up the bead blaster that lives under the back porch cover for me. Used plenty of bungee cords and ratchet straps, it stayed in place without flapping, and came through what few storms we had with flying colors. It'll go back on in the fall, so we'll see how well it does the second time around.
The ones truckers use are pretty heavy-duty but pricey ... should hold up tho' ... ;)
