Snowblower and pto hp for 2012 sc2400

Hi guys,
First post. Purchased a used 2012 sc2400 last week with only 32 hours on it. Came with the fel. Thinking I am going to load the rear tires. Looking into rear snowblowers right now. Thinking in the 60 inch range. I have 24 hp at the motor and 16.5 at the pto. I see many other tractors with 24 and 19 or so at the pto. Is my Yanmar less efficient? More hp loss due to higher motor rpm? Have read some posts on here about widening this little guy out. I just may do that as I see no drawbacks for me. I just will use the fel and the blower. How well do this tractor run a 60 inch blower? I understand that most of that comes from being able to use the right foot as needed. Dealers are telling me I can run it no problem. Good to be back with any type of tractor. I grew up on a large farm and this is as close as I will get to having a real tractor probably ever again. Thanks in advance for any info or advice on this tractor.

You've chosen well......the Sc2400 is a great machine and workhorse. I loaded the rear tires on mine and it makes a solid difference.

Unsure on the PTO HP, I don't believe there's a standard for all manufacturers, so they may all use different RPM's. Same goes for loader specs, all over the charts.

As for blowers.....I've got no experience with 3 PT blowers. I've got a permanent kink in my neck from the military and turning around to check on the blower is not for me.....:laughing:

Yanmar does make a 52" heavy duty blower (SB52) that is supposed to be the cats meow.....but much more $$$ than the 3-pt blower. (4500) They also used to make a SB45 blower that was much lighter duty (residential use) that you could find much cheaper but might be hard to find, and they are not built strong....again probably OK for light residential use.
A 60" 3 point......to me seems a bit big for the machine, I would think a 48" or 54" would be more appropriate. Sure it might run a 60", but you'll be moving pretty slow getting into any substantial amount of snow.

Hi and thanks for responding. Today I think we will be working on this little tractor and switch the rear wheels around and load them. I think at that point a 54 inch blower will barely cover its tracks but not sure on that yet. Pretty sure we will have to go pretty slow in a good storm. Have to go with a rear blower due to price and want to leave the fel on. Wonder if there is any way to turn the fuel pump up 10% like we did on all of our farm tractors? I do not want to turn it into a smoker but a bit more power should be obtainable I would think? My 325 John Deere tractor with a 18 hp Kawasaki runs my 42 inch front mount single stage snowthrower pretty well. I would think this tractor can run another 18 inches equally as well? So far this tractor has impressed me. It is not the size I would have wanted but the price was a great deal. Pretty much came down to this tractor or no tractor and this one works just fine. Much more than I expected. Not a fan of the rocker pedal but it is what it is. Thanks for the advice.

Today we picked up the items from tractor supply to load the tires with rv antifreeze. Dealer wanted 150 to load back two tires at the dealership. I would have to drop off and pick up in a couple days. Decided to do it myself while widening out the tractor. Picked the tractor up and pulled the first wheel. Bingo...you guessed it. Tire was already filled. Appears to be antifreeze. Older gentleman that owned the tractor must have had it already done. I was amazed as he only had the tractor 32 hours but the dealer must have guided him that direction. Now I have plenty of antifreeze for my rv. Tractor handles far better with the tires swapped. Was worth the time.

I have an Sc2450 tractor the same as you but with the backhoe.
I have the Yanmar SB52 front mounted snowblower, It is a beast, I snowblow two 250' long driveways in the winter it really throws the snow.
It has never clogged up even with the wettest snow.

I have heard good things but front mount is not the way for me to go. Does it lug the tractor much? Just got done leveling the dirt I brought into the backyard. Widening the tractor did great things. I glad I did it early in it's life with me.

No it does not lug down the engine, even going through the end of the driveway where the road plow leaves a big pile of snow it may drop 100-200 rpm.

That is impressive. I know that 60-64 inch is pretty big but I usually blow with the storm. We get hammered here. Sounds like I should have enough power. I wonder if anyone has turned the fuel pump up on any of these? I am loving this tractor.

I do not know if you know this or not but the Mid-Power Take Off (PTO) runs at 2100 RPM When Engine RPM is at 3300 RPM and the Rear-Power Take Off (PTO) runs at 540 RPM when the engine RPM is at 3300 RPM.
This is why a rear snowblowers have a hard time throwing the snow far.

I love this technical stuff. If I take a 540 pto and put it direct to a 22 inch fan I get a tip speed of 3110 feet per minute. I am not that up on the reduction of the mid mount pto though. Any idea of a tip speed there? I do know if the blower tolerance does not pick up a nickel the blower cannot throw snow hardly at all. Pick a nickel leave a dime and I will throw it over onto the neighbors. Amazing what the difference is. I snowblow a large area for my business. I have watched the youtube videos many times. For the life of me I do not know why the tolerances are set so wide on the rear mounts. Stones? You see some with the same size fan blow like crazy and some can hardly get it out the chute. I looked at a blower last week that had over a half inch tolerance. That was a no go for me.

The front PTO is roughly 4 times faster than the rear. So a "tip" speed of 12440 feet per minute.

I was always under the understanding that there is a gear reduction on the snowblower to slow the fan down? Any idea of fan size? That would put the snow out of the county. I could deal with that

Yes there is a gear reduction on my SB52 blower I believe it reduced to increase torque on the fan. My fan housing is 17" across the blade is slightly smaller the the housing.
I believe Woodmax Power Equipment is made in Buffalo New York. Check out their website, and give them a call, they list a 60" rear blower and it requires 18-30 PTO HP. It weighs in at 695 pounds, our tractors can lift 661 pounds. You have to add the weight of snow on and in the blower also. Plus the added weight of the hydro chute and deflector.
They list a 48" blower that weighs 529 pounds and a POT HP of 15-25.

I emailed them yesterday asking if anyone with one of our tractors has tried it. The site looks nice but I want to see one in person. Imagine buying one and cannot lift it? I have seen others that say it does not weigh that much but figure the manufacturer should know. That one is in the top 3 right now for me. Will be going to the Empire Farm Days next week to see more in person.

Yeah that would not be good if you bought one and could not lift it. There is a lot to think about before buying.
What other manufactuers are you looking at?

Just got an email from Woodmaxx telling me I cannot lift the 60 inch. Next one down is 48. So that brand is out. Have looked at LandPride and Bervac so far.

I guess I'm confused. Berco offers a 48 " and a 56" rear snowblower designed for 16 to 25 hp. Your SC2400 should be able to handle either size . . and your wheel width is normally 44.5 inches as I remember and with wheel rims reversed you gain about 2.5 inches on each.

So why wouldn't the pro series 1 work for you ?

The day will come when I go to a larger tractor. I have not seen a Berco 56 that I recall. Some 51 and many 54. 54 puts me pretty close to the width of the tractor. I think you are right on the tractor being around 49-50 inches.
