"Totally agree with YOU Andy. Something tells me that this fella is just like lot coming on here now adays. If you are serious about privacy.......big if.....or just on here to run your mouth......Dogs are not by instinct going to bark and carry on unless trained, encouraged, or at least something pointed out to them in the beginning that something is going on and how to act...........But then again, the op says he knows how to train a dog........"

Dennis,

Thanks for the apology in the middle of your post. I wasn't sure what a doober was so I googled it. I don't think I'm a doober.

I'm pretty damned serious about privacy, you can ask any of my neighbors. I've run many a trespasser off my property but I'm not going to shoot my mouth off about how I did it on a public forum. I'm sure I was outside the boundary of the law on several occasions.

As far as the dogs go, one is 15 years old and deaf. She'll alert us if she sees someone. The other is a rescue dog and we're her 4 home. I'm pretty sure she had the bark beat out of her before I got her.

A gate isn't going to stop any trespasser hiking up though the woods at our place. We're surrounded on all four side of the property by thick woods and deep ravines. I'm doing the best I can without spending our retirement at this point. We're a one income family, my wife stays home to raise the kid and that's the way I want it.

Regarding posting to see my own words, look at my post count over the course of 12 years. I don't post just to read my own posts.

Does anyone make a wired version of the Dakota MURS? I want to run power to a gate as well as fiber optic for an IP camera for our 1/4 mile drive I'm building. Several friends have mentioned a solar powered gate but I have other stuff I want to run too and don't want a setup that's easy to mess with. The land we bought was undeveloped for years so all the teen boys in the area grew up hunting on it and riding their motorcycles all over the place without permission from anyone (owner lived out of state) so now I'm having a time with them.

If you're going wired, just use a magnetic probe like so: Probes

Get yourself some geese. They'll alert you every time someone comes.

I've actually thought about getting guinea hens but don't know if the wife (and neighbors ... even though they are thousands of feet away) could handle it. Mainly want to keep ticks down but have heard they are great watchdogs too.

Our dog is a Black Mouth Cur (BMC). He is a neutered Male of about 75 lbs. He'll be 2 years old this month. He thinks it is his job to guard us and our property. He comes by this naturally. He patrols a certain perimeter of our property and does not roam. Nothing gets by him, animal or person. He's not mean but he's not friendly either. He is intimidating. He is very good at his job.

Meet MF Jones.
He's a great looking dog, and I love the name. Hilarious.

Dogs are great but the idea is to get them to stop before they get far.

Have a sensor that lights up a sign day/night just inside your property. Sign says;

My property,
You're trespassing,
I have a very big gun.

Back out! Don't return.

When the sign says no trespassing, do you mean it? To intruders, I am a complete Ars. I carry everyday on my place. They won't return.

Normal No trespassing signs don't work. However, look at some of the No Trespassing signs Survivalists post. Those tend to get a lot more attention.

I can't tell you much about stopping people from coming up the drive but I would never be without a good dog. We have a Shepherd/Beagle mix, she's about 75 pounds and scares everyone that doesn't know her. Bark that will rattle the windows. She'll run full bore at the door and jump on it if someone is knocking. I doubt she'd actually bite anyone but is scary because of the intensity. She may have learned this from the dog we had when she was a pup, he was a Minnie Collie and very watchful over the kids. Both dogs fixed. After the collie died we got a yellow lab, great dog and very alert but not a watchdog because she wants to be friends with everyone. The good thing about multiple dogs though is if one senses or hears something, the other will notice and also react. The Shepherd mix is 10 years old and doesn't hear quite as well as the young lab but she is quick to pick up the labs senses. When the mix dog goes then we will probably get a full bread Shepherd.

Update on the German Shepherd puppy, he's almost 7 months old, 70 lbs. and at least 24 in. tall @ shoulder. He's killed 3 moles, an opossum, and at least one mouse that I've found. He's got a heck of bark for such a young dog and seems to pay attention a lot better than the mix breed rescue. Now if I only would take the time to train him more.
