From what I have read on this thread, I thought the OP was wanting something to cut low hanging branches off tree, not cutting under brush at ground level.

Yeah, I just need to keep the roads/trails open. Got a 8' bush hog for mowing. Chain saw for the bigger stuff. I have a couple of questions in to the Samuri folks and the SS Solutions folks about the "Razor 5' sickle" as to their intended design/use of their cutters.

I did a little looking at the Samuri. Looks like it uses a stator rotor type motor. 3cuin size with 3 gpm oil and only 500psi. Thats only about 20ftlbs of torque and less than 1hp. Not sure how the motor is mounted, gear reduction or belt driven, but the 3 cuin motor with 3 gpm should spin about 230rpms. The sickle bar should be moving pretty fast, but I dont know how those sickle blades will hold up to a lot of limb cutting. Looks to me like something to trim hedges with and not trees. I think something with a little heavier cutter might do pretty well. I havent seen one in person so maybe I am just over thinking it.

replace hydraulic with "orchard" or "forestry" or "vineyard"

i saw more pictures of circular saw blades. vs anything else.

the only time i saw a sickle mower / hedge trimmer like blade, the details were around 1.5" max and more like 1.25" max branch size.

the circular saw blades. (multi stacked) saw multi notations of 3 to 4" in size. assuming blades are 10" to 12" in diameter. kinda like a regular circular saw blade / table saw blade i am guessing.

Hello Gang, I don't have anything special to offer....just saw the call for a hydraulics engineer and read through the postings. Hydraulic design isn't really my strong suit, although I have done little bit of that kind of design - mostly cylinders and linkages - not much on pumps and motors. But reading through this discussion I quickly realized that it was time for me to just sit back and pay attention to what could be gleaned from all the great, weird, and downright odd solutions folks have come up with for trimming. So I've been just sitting back and learning.
What an interesting discussion it is, too! Just about every post or reference starts my thoughts down a different path. Boggen, that's a great list of devices and some very innovative solutions. Makes me proud to part of the fraternity.

Like you, I think a circle saw would make the best setup. While a gang saw with multiple circle blades works very well, I have seen those run, they are kind of expensive for someone just wanting something for personal use. In post 28, I offered up a feebe of a assortment of parts to make a single saw setup. I am sort of suprised no one has taken me up on the offer. With some minimal fabricating, a pto hydraulic pump, and a good hydraulic motor, retip the blade and one could have a pretty good trim saw pretty dang cheap.
