VW Clean diesels.... how did they get them so clean?

The focus on carbon dioxide and ignoring of nitrous oxide and particulates due to elevating global warming concerns above those of public health will now be reevaluated.

:D If it were Nitrous oxide being spewed by VWs most people would be laughing about it- (Laughing Gas) the other gas is not so funny

Still a greenhouse gas nevertheless :)

And today VW announced that their gasoline engines don't get the reported MPG. They must figure they will come clean on all the bad news at once, so they can pile it on the scape goats they are firing.

The latest info I could find on GDI PM:

A lot of the problems still sound to me like the same problems with diesel. GDI PM is higher at cold start and under load from everything I've ever read about the subject. Burning stuff in an air environment is what's common gas, diesel, your backyard grill.

Dude, you GDI is getting a GPF!:
Tenneco’s Gasoline Particulate Filter Technology Ready to Meet Euro 6c Emissions Regulations | Business Wire

And here's the rub:

"Advanced fuel injection strategies are currently used to control gasoline particulate emissions in-cylinder but they are designed for a particular emission test cycle and may be less effective under real driving conditions"

Yea, same problems with the TDI meeting the spec. 'under real driving conditions' is the issue for both GDI and TDI.

Just thinking out loud here but it looks like GPF's don't need a regen because the GDI exhaust temps are much higher than diesel. So instead of dumping fuel etc. into DPF for regen, why not use a super cap or something to super heat the honeycomb structure for a regen (think hot air gun) instead of wasting fuel?

I've been following the Mazda Skyactive diesel for years and was always curious about their claim about no after treatment. Their weird approach with low compression ratio etc. made me wonder if it could really be done. Now it looks like it's still on track to come to US but they finally caved and will be using some kind of DPF. Maybe they will be able to 'really' meet the spec. and deliver performance and mpg too? We'll have to wait and see I guess.

Dang. You all know I'm pretty slow ... looks like someone already thought of it ... GM and the big guns ... Oak Ridge Lab!

Unlike VW, Mazda seems to be playing by the rules. I would have bought a Skyactive diesel a couple years ago in a CX5 or even a 6 if it had been available. They couldn't get the level of performance that VW had and still meet EPA rules so they held off. If I were Mazda, I'd sue VW.

If they would not have delayed it, I would of bought the Mazda 6. Still watching .... hopefully whatever it is they've fixed the fuel/oil dilution problem.

All this damage to save $335 per vehicle. Incredible.

Report: Diesel Emissions Cheat Saved VW $335 Per Car

Automotive News reports that the crisis began when then坊W brand chief Wolfgang Bernhard and engineer Rudolf Krebs began developing a new diesel engine for the U.S. market in 2005. Bernhard and Krebs realized that an AdBlue urea exhaust-treatment system would be needed to meet U.S. emissions standards, at an estimated cost of $335 per vehicle. Reportedly, VW finance heads determined this cost was too high, as a company-wide cost-cutting exercise was then underway.
