Diesel's cheaper or at the same price as gas here now.... so now its just the one thing holding you back....

Yep and he can probably get a nearly new used diesel VW for less than the gas version if he acts soon!!

Just can't register it to drive on the streets.
New car sales have been halted. Don't think used car private sales have. Government has not ordered the affected models be removed from the roads. Checked a Carmax site. They have a few used diesels for sale still.

Actually .. I just went and Googled this. Found a Consumer Reports article that says sales and registration aren't halted, at least for now in California.

California Air Resources Board rules over emissions law.

Some good news, for now: CARB will not, for the moment, take action against owners or their cars when it comes time to register or sell their Volkswagen diesel.

"There should be no impact at this point, because the investigation is ongoing," CARB spokesman David Clegern told Consumer Reports.

Once the official recall is issued, however, the clock will begin ticking for California owners.

"Six months after the launch of a recall, the manufacturer must supply the VINs from those owners who have not had the recall completed," Clegern said. "These names are flagged by DMV, and owners are not allowed to register their vehicle until the recall is performed. The manufacturer will provide monthly updates to CARB for one year updating those owners that have received the recall repair."

"This program has been very successful in ensuring owners receive the recall fix and we have shown the repair rate to reach a 93-plus percent repair rate," he continued. "Our priority is to get the vehicles into compliance."

Worst case - I wonder what will happen if, as we have seen declared in this thread, it is impossible to make an update that will meet specs. Maybe turn the car in for an exchange?

Maybe strip them, crush them, and recycle the metal. And a new car credit to any manufacturer the prior owner chooses. Value at purchase time, not at time of crisis exposed.

Heck we (California) can't even run non-conforming diesels as a ditch pump any more, they have to be sold out of state.

That's because our ag regions have some of the most smog-polluted air in the country.

My neighbor just gave up on his IH 10-ton harvest truck after several ag-only (low miles) deadline extensions, and replaced it with a used newer model that needed a $10,000 urea-injection upgrade before he could put it in service. Air here near the coast is great ... because our smog blows over to the Central Valley and piles up against the Sierras - where it gags everybody there. :D (Photo) and post describing the photo.

Germany Could Ban 2.8 Million Diesel VWs From Its Roads

Yesterday, VW received a letter from Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority, signed by transport minister Alexander Dobrindt, demanding that it deliver a binding plan and schedule to fix the 11 million "cheat code" diesel cars by October 7.

Germany is coming down hard on its biggest carmaker over the diesel-emissions crisis, giving Volkswagen just over a week to come up with a fix to a problem eight years in the making. Yesterday, VW received a letter from Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority, signed by transport minister Alexander Dobrindt, demanding that it deliver a binding plan and schedule to fix the 11 million "cheat code" diesel cars by October 7. If Volkswagen can't present a viable solution by then, according to Dobrindt, the German government would have no choice but to ban the 2.8 million affected cars from driving on that country's roads. Switzerland has already banned affected cars from being sold, new or used, and other countries continue to investigate their options; the U.S. arm of VW issued a stop-sale order on new diesel VWs last week.

Quick question....other than me....how many of you actually own one of the VW TDI vehicles in question?
I do, 09 JSW.

Have gotten up to 48 mpg riding light and keeping it under 75 mph.

Love mine up till not long ago. During the first 125,000 miles I only had one problem with it. The A/C compressor runs all the time and flow is controlled by a valve. The valve failed and I found a replacement valve. The Dealer will replaced the entire compressor.... $$$$$$$$$$. Worst fuel mileage in that time was 42.8 and the best was something. Like 48.7. Averaged 45-46 . About 135,000 and it shows signs of a cracked DPF. Pulling out the DPF, cats, egr etc...along with a Malone Tune will cost about $1200 -$1300. Big increase in torque and HP as well as 8-10 more MPG! I think now I'll wait and see what the fallout is before doing any work to it. May be time to upgrade at low cost...we will see.
The a/c fix cost my BIL and I the valve and freon. Very easy, about a 10 minute job, not counting drawdown and testing.

The big worry is the HPFP, which would explode and cost $8K plus to repair.
