All this damage to save $335 per vehicle. Incredible.

Report: Diesel Emissions Cheat Saved VW $335 Per Car

Yes, and no, on the it's incredible at saving just $335/car. Remember GM and their saving money on the gas tanks mounted by the pickup driver side door? The recent Jeep, 'add a hitch' solution to reduce impact and explosion when rear ended? The recent GM ignition switches, and at least 100 deaths as a result of their ten year denial/ avoidance of the problem? Cost cutting, even to pennies, is the norm for automotive manufacturers. Deaths result, they usually get away with the consequences, until they don't.

On an intellectual level, I understand that. On a moral level, I never will. I don't have the capacity to cheat in order to save a few bucks. I'm too rules based to operate on that level.

Anyone ever drive just 1mph over the speed limit? That's kind of cheating. I know I do. Usually no more than 5mph over. However, I often wonder, as was the case just today for me, when a little kid ran out into traffic and danced between a bunch of cars going 35. Everyone avoided him and he made it back to the curb. What would happen if a little kid ran out in front of me and I just couldn't stop in time and I was going just a few MPH over? How would I feel? Would I feel any different if I hit him at 35 or 30? If the speed limit was 30 and I was going 31 or 32, how guilty would I feel by coulda woulda shoulda for the rest of my life? Its a risk. What if someone dies due to my design flaw? What if it wasn't a flaw but a cost cutting design only to be found flawed later? Of course, once its known, it should be immediately fixed. A cost cutting design that kills people isn't criminal, unless its known. Covering it up once its known is inexcusable.

They saved $167,000,000..... for a while, at least....

Pocket change, these companies have BILLIONS to spend, and profits of untold unimaginable amounts. The Porsche family and Wolfs-in sheeps-clothing families, and German towns of all auto workers. It's an entire culture of auto/gearheads. They've been at this since the Nazis started VW.

On an intellectual level, I understand that. On a moral level, I never will. I don't have the capacity to cheat in order to save a few bucks. I'm too rules based to operate on that level.

Morals; you aren't eligible to work in the automotive field, sir. Sorry.

And lets not forget the Ford Pinto!

Somehow my mom and I survived owning a '71 Pinto, that had 2 brake light switches go out. By the grace of God. (Not too fond of Ferds)...

Just read the 266 posts on this...So now we know why no other car maker has introduced diesels (to the extent) like VW did, although they've been trying for years and years. Yah Yah, the Cruze TD. We've already heard from zz how GM just turns in its own tests to the EPA.

Don't misunderstand me, I love diesels but the maintenance and initial higher costs dissuaded me. Get rid of those 2 factors, and get diesel cheaper than gas, and I might reconsider.

No, no, not the Pinto!
I remember laughing my A^% off when a movie depicted a Pinto being rear ended by a tank, in slow motion, and it blew up!
It was soo funny at the time.
