Axlehub,

Just two points:

1. If you only know of 4 catastrophic failures out of the many people on TBN, that indicates they are extremely rare just as I previously indicated.

P.s. to glade

I think you misunderstood my statement. I wasn't talking about the whole of tbn . . I was talking about people who pm me . . . very small part of tbn's total grouping.

Your fun Glade . . a good debater with a little smirk on your face and an ace or two up your sleeve :)

AxleHub,

Thank you for proving my point. $10K - $6K (being generous on final selling price) = 40% depreciation. Please don't assume you know what I pick up on. I've only made a few points in this thread and I've let many of your statements go because they aren't worth my time. Take care.

Gladehound - please post a picture of yourself. I think you and I are long lost brothers... :)

I continue to be amazed at friends and colleagues who buy new and have little versus those who buy second hand and could easily afford the new.
.

Reminds me of that old wine commercial "If you're so rich, why do you buy such cheap wine... how do you think I GOT so rich!"

Bspeedy .Why would I buy a 3 year old used scut for 12500 or 13000 when I can get new with my option choices for 14200 and cheap financing?

Neither is enough value to temp me. ;) Your tractor could literally fit in my snow bucket yet it cost 75% as much to buy! I'm just being factual here. Hopefully I'm not getting into that insulting territory yet. Let me know if I go too far.

I agree with Axlehub on many issues here including the pricing effect on the SC2400 as I looked at the exact same machine at one time. $10,500 including loader, MMM, and BB was my quote. On tractor house right now, most with loaders are actually priced higher than that.

My dealer has said to me more than once that usually used tractors bring their original sales price over time due to the effect of inflation. This is true after say a 5 year period or more in my own experience looking at them. The first several years are the hardest to command that price due to the "buying new" for not much more and financing incentives. Usually new carries 0% financing, while used is several percent, then payment comparisons hurt the slightly used tractor market. Give inflation a few more years, then you're back to break even (although it's not really break even because dollars are worth less in the future).

In any regard, I'm only moderately mechanically inclined and only have so much free time for tractoring, so anytime I can buy new I do. The last thing I want to mess with is spending my little free time doing repairs when I really need to be using the equipment. That's my main angle. If I had more free time, I'd be more inclined to buy used and take a risk.

I have now owned two tractors. A Kubota L3800 and now a BX2370. I loved them both for different reasons, but found with the larger tractor I wasn't using it as much as I knew I'd use the BX. I have 2 properties (11 acres total) and the BX does all I need it to do. By downsizing, I was a little concerned about it, but my brother had the BX-25D already so I had an idea of what I was getting into. I must say that I am amazed at what the BX is capable of. Sure the L could do more faster and I miss that sometimes, but the BX is still extremely capable for it's size and on top of that, I can mow with it, so it sees a lot more use than my L did, just as I suspected.

We each have different opinions and reasons for what we selected. I would just tell the OP to not underestimate the SCUTs; especially for only a couple acres.

Do all tier 4 machines have diesel particulat filters? Was just old by a dealer that they cost 1200 bucks when you need to change it. Is it hard to replace?

Tractorshopper,

I think you're right that a tractors price will stay fairly flat with time due to the offsetting effects of inflation and depreciation. And I think this works for most SCUTs and CUTS. I think you have a better chance of making out well if you can skip that initial dip in value by buying used and from a private seller. The prices you see on Tractorhouse are generally higher than a private seller will get.

I made an exception with my latest tractor purchase and bought "new". My before tax price was 19.6K on a 2013 DS4510HS (leftover / demo / full warrantee). The listing below is for the same tractor but USED with less expensive R1 tires and without the hydraulic reverser and shorter remaining warrantee and they are sill asking $2000 than I paid. But the reality is, it would be very difficult for me to sell my now used tractor for more than I paid or even close to what I paid even though I got a good deal. Private sellers never make out as well as dealers and I doubt the seller in the add will get the asking price even though they are a dealer.

If you own a tractor, you can't just look on Tractorhouse and think you'll sell it for as much as the ads. It doesn't work in reality. But in most cases, you still do fairly well. They don't depreciate the way a car does.

Nikko,

When you have 25.99 hp or less . . Tier 4 is no sweat. 26 hp and above starts to add more extensive mechanical and maintenance issues and costs.

That alone is good reason to stay below 26 hp if you're already thinking about something around that hp. (see - I agreed with Nikko, it is possible!) ;)

Do these machines have to be inspected? I understand for emission, but who is regulating all this the epa? how long does a dpf filter last?
