Adapting Truck Snow Plow to Quick Attach

For those of you that are having issues plowing gravel driveways you might consider using gauge wheels. The picture shows the plow that I used for several years with homemade wings and gauge wheels that have solid rubber tires. With the loader in the float position and using the curl function I would angle forward to scrape the cement garage apron and then tilt back to have the plow ride on the gauge wheels for the gravel part. This plow was only about 6 feet wide and didn't weigh that much so heavier plows will have to use wider tires (so as not to sink in unfrozen gravel) or just double up the tires on each side. I moved and had my drive asphalted this summer so I now have a new plow with only wide shoes on it. Can't wait to try it.

I'm going to adapt a 6' 6" Western snowplow for universal quick attach. What thickness adapter plate is recommended? I see 1/4, 5/16, 3/8. Some are grade 50 steel. This will be put on a 40Hp LS tractor.

I might also use it on my 26 Hp Kubota B2620 if I change it to quick attach.

I don't know that it really matters as long as you run braces for you mounts across the entire face. I think it's best to spread that force out across the plate.

In the end it is really going to depend on your design. FWIW I went with 5/16" because it was only a $10 or $15 up-charge from the 1/4"

My blade had a 1/4 plate.

I went with 5/16" QA plate.

Thanks guys. I think I'll look for 5/16ths grade 50.

My QA plate was about 100 bucks and for another 200, I got a pair of 8' and a pair of 10' hoses and necessary fittings/quick couplers to mount/dismount plow, loader arms, and of course the rear connection. I fabbed up some simple brackets to keep them against the inside of the loader arms. I snaked the others under the cab. There's enough other plumbing under there to keep them in place. Out front, I haven't decided if I should make a bracket to hold the ends, or just put a hose clamp around the hoses and front tube.

Seems like any plow is tough to use on gravel until things freeze up, but I'm hoping this will provide a decent backup for my truck. If the truck had something major let go, (clutch, transmission, or axle) trying to keep up using just a rear blower did not sound like fun. We are the last house on "seasonal" road, so I'm pretty much married to it for the winter. I plow about a mile of road and 4 neighbors (one with a store and parking area) that I also keep cleared.

Well, I finally finished welding the quick attach conversion up. It was my first time welding. A few welds look pretty good, then, some look downright ugly. But, in the end I believe that the pieces are sufficiently stuck together.

Now it is a matter of blasting and painting them. Not sure that I can do much until I get some available time with above freezing temps. Moisture tends to reek havoc in the 150' of air hose from the compressor in the garage to the blasting booth in the barn.

ugly, but it looks sturdy. I like the backset part to keep the plow closer to the tractor rather than hanging way out front like mine.
