I see that an important point was missed by my earlier comment many pages ago, So I fully understand the pros of "carrying "........but what about the one big "con" that seems to be ignored or avoided to be talked about. ........again I will repeat I have rifles, but according to Canadian law we must keep them locked up , and ammunition locked up separately from the guns. They tell us that law is needed so that children or other innocents cannot access the guns.
Quite frankly I hate that they are that strict , I prefer to have a 22 with clip close by so I can shoot the **** skunks or porcupines , when I see them and not after I run to garage unlock the rifle cabinet, unlock the ammunition and run back out and....where did that **** varmit go........... But I suspect that there are pretty good reasons for that law , because I would not be able to live with myself if my grandchildren came across a gun and a clip and put them together and had an accident. So then I have to figure that there are some risks occurring when you have a pistol and clip at your bedside table, or in your jean jacket that you left in the kitchen while you make yourself a cup of coffee............is this not a concern ? ...and how do you make 100% sure that a innocent curious child does not come across a gun and clip? Maybe this is the question one should not dare to ask ?

Strange.. A law that states, your guns have to be locked up... We have gun laws as well.. Those laws state, certian people aren't allowed to obtain ,or keep guns..
That law don't seem to be working out very well, as law breakers are going to break the law no matter what laws you have..

I educated my children about guns, and the dangers of playing with guns at a very young age. Some Children here in the south went hunting with their fathers at a very young age,so they learn about guns..My sons owned a 22 rifle at a young age to hunt squirrel ,and rabbit.. They also carried a 22 to coon hunt

My wife and I don't have children...that said, I keep all our firearms in a safe except for what we are currently carrying. I don't relish the idea of coming home to find someone else armed with one of our firearms. I don't need a law to tell me how to keep our home safe, and from 20 plus years in law enforcement (and counting) I know that people that are going to break a law will break it no matter how well that law is propped up with other laws. Onerous government only hurts law abiding citizens.

Great answer. I'll add, gun owners that need a law to tell them to protect innocent children are going to ignore and disobey that law anyway.

So it's a debate about guns, is it? Here is what I found online:

Some Factual Gun Statistics – Part 2 of A Cultural Comparison: Gun Violence In The US And Europe

Seems to be a few "cultural" differences.

When you step away from the gun only debate and look at violent crime the picture changes. Obviously where guns are outlawed the stats for gun violence are less, but the overall violence isn't being looked at. Articles like that are intended to trick people with stats that do not show the big picture.

Don't make the mistake that just because we don't carry guns in Canada that we don't have them and know how to use them. The vast majority of the older generation up here grew up with firearms and were taught how to use them and respect them at a very early age, just like in the U.S. We simply don't have that basic amendment that states we are allowed to bear arms and as a result the cultural changes came about. With only one tenth of the population and ten times the space, we also have a highly visible and well equipped police force that is armed to the teeth. It's an entirely different world up here.

One of our biggest concern with guns is when we travel south of the border, because it seems to be a really big deal for nearly everyone to carry a handgun down there, and handguns are basically useless for shooting anything other then people. "Guns" is also a very blanket description of firearms and tends to blur the facts and functional differences between long guns and hand guns. It also completely overlooks the reality that there are other deadly weapons such as knives and compound bows that can be equally deadly if not more deadly given a need to defend ones self and their loved ones. As weapons go, hand guns kinda suck in many respects and if you are ever likely to accidentally shoot yourself, it would probably be with a hand gun.

I'm not looking to get into a debate here, just offering another way of looking at the situation.
If you can't protect yourself with 16 shots from the 2 guns you are wearing, maybe it's time to start wearing a sword :|

Well, we are not allowed to have hand guns where I live, so extra mags wouldn't do me much good.

Having fired several hundreds of thousands of rounds thru handguns over several decades, that is hard for me to imagine. Our experiences are vastly different. Yet we both appreciate and use the fine machinery that are tractors. Likewise I appreciate and use the fine machinery that are handguns. I like long guns too, expecially if they are black.:D
