Scored a few goodies today!

One of these days I am going to getroundtoit and finish up my sa200 build. I have already had all the engine machining done, sandblasted and primered the hood and frame. Now its just setting in pieces in the back of my shop. I need to fix it or sell it, but having a hard time making up my mind which I want to do.

I had the engine rebuilt for my 1966 Red face beginning of the year. Took the generator into the repair shop in Seattle to have dielectric baked on the inside. Took 35-weeks for that little task:irked::muttering:. Got it all back together a month or so ago. Boy she welds so sweet!

Well, I didn't get to play with any of my new junk because I spent the evening trying to get my truck unstuck. It's pretty bad. image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg
I did get the welder out of the bed and winched over out of the way. In the process I knocked the cap off the end. It looks pretty nasty in there, lacquer is a flaking off the coils, old dirt and wasp nests inside. The brushes are there on the end and they look ok. Can anyone tell anything from the pics besides being pretty nasty inside?
Btw, I'm going to try to find a receiver mount winch tomorrow to try and extract my truck. I have a warn 12000lb on the front but I've got to come backwards before I can use the front winch. Any recommendations on a winch setup for the rear? I should have never been in that bad spot to begin with but I have learned my lesson. If I ever get it out it's staying on the street from now on lol.

If you weren't half way across the country, I'd let you use mine;). I through it together a few years ago, but haven't used it yet.

Yea that's just the tool I need, I wish you were closer too! I may have to bite the bullet and buy another winch today. I've got the M12000 on the front but I may get the cheaper VR12000 and put it on a receiver mount. Then I can put receivers on the front and rear of my tractor too and not get my truck stuck getting it out next time lol. TSC has a 10,000 lb winch for 329$ that might work. I have 2 snatch blocks, but this heavy azz truck is sitting on the frame at the moment...
SA, can you tell anything by looking at the exciter and coils in those pics above? Looks like the insulation is missing on the coils, hopefully that's not a huge deal. I'm not sure what looks like high or lower hours by looking at the exciter, or even if that can be determined by looking at it. The starter spins everything when hooked up, but I didn't do compression checks yet. The bad thing is the welder is now stranded out next to the mud hole until everything dries up a little. Boy I really flubbed up with this stuck thing I swear!

Any welding repair shop can re wrap those exciters. I would get the engine running first. Then tackle the generator.
If need be, but I wouldn't think so, you can buy exciters.

Ok that's good to know, and I'll start with the engine. Thanks for the help much appreciated! I'm hoping we get more dry weather so I can get the whole rig into the shop finally. I'll probably check compression first, then pull the head and drop the pan to have a look. The guy I got it from said the magneto probably needed to be rebuilt. Looks like a distributor conversion might be a cheaper route, not sure which way to go if it comes to that. I do think I'll forego trying to redo the vacuum operated governor and go with the electronic idle card and solenoid if everything else checks out.
Are there any major differences between a short hood and a later SA200?

Btw I finally got my truck and tractor out of the hole. I picked up this 10,000# which at tsc for 329$. I gotta say it works pretty doggone well especially for the money. We had to rig up 2 snatch blocks for the first pull to get the frame out of the mud. It was a mess but thank God it's out! I'm gonna put receiver sockets on the front and back of my tractor so next time it gets stuck I can get it right out. The winch may or may not hold up for serious wheeling, but I think for occasional use it'll be great. Honestly it seems to pull close to my M12000 I have on the front!

Bills website has the serial number-year info and if I understand correctly this welder is a 1949 model. The serial number is A226xxx and code 1422. If only it could talk!

The only real difference is, the Short hoods have a 4-gear main amp selector. The Long hoods have a 5-gear main amp selector. In mid 1973 Lincoln started using aluminum in the generator, and to have enough room the generator was made into an octagon shape. I've had both models, and it's very obvious in the arc. Nothing beats 100% copper!:cool2:
