Movin South... Silly yankee questions...

Eddie;

I attended a seminar, put on by our Colorado County Agri-Life Extension Agent about the Tawny Crazy Ants that have now been found in our County. They will be the new fire ant replacement and are much harder to control as they are very random and don't make mounds like the imported fire ant.

Dr. Robert Pucket,from TAMU, gave a presentation on what TAMU and other universities are researching on their migration and various control techniques. According to the maps he had they are not in your area ....... yet. But they are coming. I will post his presentation when I get near my computer. TAMU believes that the Tawny Crazy Ant might displace the Imported Fire Ant but, we will not be happy if that happens.

Being treacly sweet to your face but often quite nasty behind your back is a southern, not northern trait. What you see, grumpy or not, is what you get in the north.

You don't know many southerners ,, The ones I know ,my self included, Have no problem saying something to your face, weather you like it or not.. We would never say something behind your back we wouldn't say to your face

Before traveling south. Learn the proper pronunciation for Pecan pie . I had a southerner growl at me for the grievous error.

Interesting, is this pretty universal in all northern states, I've met quite a few in conferences or when they moved down here and didn't really notice it, but I've never been north of Chicago? How are "southerners" going to know this is "status quo", do northerners expect southerners to simply accept "arrogant, contemptuous and bossy" behavior because of where someone lives or use to live? Which is the problem, southerners' interpretation of the "arrogant, contemptuous and bossy" behavior or the "arrogant, contemptuous and bossy" behavior? It "seems" from your post that northerners as you describe them expect that an in your face attitude should simply be accepted anywhere with the onus on the population rather than the individual. Missouri is often considered southern by northerners and northern by southerners, so I find it all kind of interesting.

Well, I don't really have trouble understanding why southerners respond the way they do to pushy impolite northerners. That's because I have been to Israel and worked with Israelis. The gulf in interpersonal politeness between the south and north is roughly the same as between the north and Israel. I have learned to remind myself that what is outrageous and impolite in one culture might just be baseline for another. In some ways it's like learning that talking to women is different than talking to guys. You just need to keep perspective and be aware how cultural differences can be confusing.

Bottom line for me is that it isn't that northerners are impolite or that southerners are too sensitive. We're different in how we interact socially and knowing that is what is crucial. Having a southerner for a mother and a Yankee father gave me lots of exposure to both sides.

Never saw any in Arkansas. But my travels were more central to north. Only a couple of trips to the far south of Ar.
