Movin South... Silly yankee questions...

We are likely going to be moving to the Miss, Louisiana, Ark. area. Some questions... Our Sheppard has never encountered a poisonous snake. Is there any danger to him, or will he have the instinct to be more cautious.... I put my hunting boots in the garage for long periods. Is there a danger of critters crawling in there? Anything else we should know about? Thanks

You should shake your boots out even where you live :) and your dog is at risk of snake bite if you move to a rural area. Not so at risk in the suburbs. My cousin lives a few miles north of New Orleans in a relatively rural area. He has a fence in his back yard that backs up to a golf course to keep his dogs in and gators out. So, there's one more thing for you to consider.....Me, I worry about frostbite where I live :)

Lots of interesting discussion here. Here is my opinion on North vs. South.

If you are nice to me, and don't try to cheat, steal, bully, or screw me in any way, then I like you. It doesn't matter to me where you are from, what color you are, what religion you follow or anything else.

Even if you are mean to me, I will usually forgive you after a while. It's a waste of time to be angry.

Back to the snake issue. Out here in the Mojave there are numerous venomous snakes. Our Golden is now 12.5 years old and about 10 years ago we took her to Rattlesnake Avoidance training. It's much cheaper and much much better for the dog to avoid snakes than to be treated afterwards. They tell you to have the dog "retrained" every 2 years but after 10 years Tess will not go near ANY snake.

This also serves a second purpose as it alerts us to snakes while we are out walking long before we see them (or feel them:D).

At the time it only cost $75.00 and takes about 10 minutes!

Google it for more information.
I'm sure we'll be looking into that....

Before traveling south. Learn the proper pronunciation for Pecan pie . I had a southerner growl at me for the grievous error.

Ok... is it pronounced PEE-can, or pee-CON????

Your post fits right in with my assessment. I felt like an alien my one visit to New York City, but felt right at home in Mount Vernon. Yankees, as a rule are well accepted here; the problem comes when they display arrogance or contempt and try to tell us dumb Okies how we ought to be doing things that we're quite happy with. Attitude is everything. We have one couple at the Elks Lodge (which, BTW might be a good place to become part of the community, if you like good food, good beer and good conversation) from Boston I believe, that no one would mistake for Southerners, but are simply wonderful people, in spite of her sometimes abrasive manner.

Might help to learn bass fishing, tomato culture, develop a taste for fried okra and if you like to talk sports, especially football, make sure where you are standing, geographically speaking. And don't wear an LSU Tee Shirt in Alabama.

I'll try some fried Okra, and raise you a plate of fried Zuccinni..... I have met those NYC and Boston people who are rather harsh, However, I've also had about twenty of them come down to the parking lot in a nearby camp ground and help me un-jackknife my camper then feed me beer all weekend!

Wasn't sure whether I was going to get a arse whuppin or the guest of honor. I guess I was the guest of honor. Great people.

This is what I tell my Yankee friends, " If I'm gonna screw you, I will at least kiss you first, and hug you afterwards". That's the difference. ..

A quick back to snakes and dogs. My dog has been bitted 4 times by a copperhead snake. She swells up for a day and then is OK. She antagonizes the snake so she probably deserves it - and she is a slow learner.

Funny story, A few years ago, We had a GE turbine crew straight from Lousiana, complete with bib overalls up to replace the buckets on a gas turbine. We get a weather phenonom here called LAKE EFFECT snow, where a small band of extremely heavy snow can form over Lake Ontario, and dump FEET of snow overnight, and last for days....

Well, the first night, those fellas were throwing snowballs and whooping it up. The second night, they asked how much could we get, and how long will it last. The third night they wanted OUT BAD!!!! So, now I get to try chiggers and snakes... ;)
