Tractor Sizing I have no clue...I need help!

I'm assuming you did not bother to read the whole post. Please do and I think you will see that I did not intend to classify it a Utility Tractor. Regardless, it's an argument of semantics not substance.

Agree with that. Words have meaning but "Utility" vs "Special Utility" to the average guy I'd say doesn't make much difference.

I'm brand new to the MX and my only prior experience with bigger stuff was 580s and 460+ dozers but I'm very impressed with what it can do so far. I think the MX is justabout perfect for working in the woods when it comes to size and capabilities.

Hey newbury, FWIW the loader specs on my MX4800 are more that twice what you listed for your M4700 (2300lbs at the bucket lip I think). I dont think it changes your point but just surprised it was that different. <snip>
Yes, it was early this a.m. and I made a typo (corrected) on the specs, Kubota used to name their loaders based on kilograms, thus my LA352 lifts 352 kg, my LA1001 on the M4700 lifts 1001 kg.

Tractor data lists your loader as:
Lift to full height (at pin): 2275 lbs
Lift to full height (at 500mm): 1691 lbs
if it's the Kubota LA1065

That makes more sense newbury! The LA1065 has 2319lb cap 500mm forward and 1.5m height and thw TractorData number you listed match my manual too.

I think for 65 mostly wooded you would want something smaller and manuverable unless you are planning on doing major things to that 65 acres. If you are just maintaining and cutting paths ect you don't need a huge tractor, especially if time saving isn't a big factor.

Front End Loader is the only thing you MUST get. Everything else is easy to add later. So think Sub-Compact or a smaller Compact tractor. (Kubota, Mahinda, Kioti, Massey Ferg., JD, and many others). I wouldn't be afraid to buy from Craigslist. I have found Tractorhouse.com to be a great source. Folding ROPS may be nice since a lot of wooded acres. Definately you want power steering and hydrostat also.

Here is a low hour one on Madison WI Craigslist. There are a couple of them out there under $10K.

My general thoughts on someone new to tractors:

I suspect that someone who has not grown up with land and tractors, or has already spent many years with them, will need to have a "learner" tractor.

That would be one "approximately" correct for the jobs needed. Use it for two or three years, and by then you will know if you need something more, less, or different. You will then be much more familiar with a tractor's capabilities, your capabilities and desires, and with the jobs you have for it. That is the time to start looking for what you need and want, instead of looking for the perfect tractor, now, with no experience.

I think there is a lot of truth to this. The problem is finding what is approximately right. It also brings up the 'new vs used' debate.

It would help if the OP would answer the questions Newbury asked early on. Everyone is guessing at this point.

That's certainly a reasonable way to go about it for many people, in many situations. I suspect a lot of people want to avoid having to buy something different later because they don't want to spend money now on something they may not ultimately be happy with...either too big, or too little.

We see a lot of new folks here who are retiring and buying their first tractor, or buying their fist piece of property big enough for a tractor, and they may not have the money in a couple of years, or don't want to be stuck with the wrong machine for a few years....which is understandable.

As already noted, there are a lot of questions the OP hasn't answered, and without those answers, it's all a guess. We don't know if he's new to tractors, what he'd be using a backhoe for, what major tasks he'd plan for etc, etc.

He's probably enjoying Christmas with his family, and isn't joined at the hip with forums like most of us (me included). If anything this thread is going to scare him away from TBN! Ha ha
